Eight teams from Southern Arizona survived the 4A, 5A and 6A play-in tournaments held Thursday night including a clean sweep from the 4A Conference.

The day started out with ten teams from Southern Arizona battling in the various quarterfinal matches taking place in Tucson and around the state and it ended with five teams moving on to Semifinal Week.

Daisy Cornidez picked up her 1,000th career point Friday night in a 48-27 win at Desert View.
No. 9 Catalina Foothills beat No. 24 Amphitheater 5-1 Thursday night in the 4A play-in tournament to advance to the state playoffs on the boy’s side.

The 1A Conference playoff picture is coming into focus with less than two weeks left in the regular season and The Gregory School has a solid grip on the top spot thanks to an 80-57 victory over No. 4 Patagonia.
Catalina Foothills improved to 18-4 overall and 3-0 in the 4A Gila Region but it wasn’t easy.

Sunnyside scored 299 points to capture the championship of the Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational. It was the 29th title for the Blue Devils in the 52-year history of the tourney. Queen Creek came in second with 167.5 points and Walden Grove was third with 156.
Sunnyside has a commanding lead heading into the semifinal round of the 52nd Flowing Wells Invitational. The Blue Devils lead Boulder Creek 170 to 112.5 with 10 wrestlers still alive in the 14 weight classes.
Globe standout Robert Burries scored 42 points Friday night against Florence, giving the junior 2,009 career points.
No. 14 Sabino and No. 20 Sahuarita played to a 0-0 tie Thursday night and the only team that benefitted in the 3A Region 7 race was No. 6 Tanque Verde.
