Sunnyside senior Kory DeBerry faced his final high school wrestling match Friday night with a chance to become a rare four-time individual state champ. DeBerry won his first three titles competing in 5A-II at 135, 140 and 145. His opponent from Mesa High in the finale, Edgar Verdi, was a state champ last year at 152 in 5A-I. With the change in conference designation both rested in Division I this year. Something had to give. It wasn\'t DeBerry.

Kofa High does not get to travel to the Valley much these days due to Yuma budget limitations, but the Kings first trip to the metro Phoenix area this season came close to being a remarkable one. The fifth-seeded Kings fought off a first-half onslaught of chances and a two-goal deficit late to No.1 seed Brophy before falling in the final three minutes to the Broncos, 4-3, in a 5A-I boys soccer semifinal at Campo Verde High School.

It has been rare this season when anyone scores on the Hamilton girls soccer team. Shutouts in 21 of 24 games and four goals allowed overall is mighty impressive. The Huskies gave up their first goal since December on Wednesday night to 5A-I semifinal foe Mesquite midway through the second half and were faced with the question: Could they respond?

Flagstaff and Valley Christian are getting ready for championship runs in different conferences in girls basketball so what better way to prepare than facing each other before the postseason begins. Flagstaff used an individual run from Kia Sandoval in the second period and a team burst early in the fourth to defeat Valley Christian, 61-44, at Valley Christian.

After watching the first half of Hamilton and Salpointe in the 5A-I boys soccer quarterfinals the advantage was clearly to Hamilton. The only problem was the Huskies lacked a goal to show for it. No. 2 seed Hamilton remedied that problem 12 minutes into the second half Saturday and posted a hard-fought 1-0 win over the No. 7 seeded Lancers at Red Mountain Soccer Complex.

Chandler High girls basketball has been in the championship neighborhood several times since the new millennium began. The Lady Wolves just haven\'t been able to net the 5A girls title that has eluded the program since 1999-2000. With Chandler winning 12 of its last 13 games, nine in a row (71-35 over Desert Vista on Friday) and resting in the No. 2 slot of the 5A-I power rankings, coach Zon Thompson is more optimistic by the day his 19-4 team can be special.
