It was the Blue and Blitzke show Friday night in Laveen as the Cesar Chavez Champions handled the Alhambra Lions 68-6.

Friday night’s Class 6A Metro region matchup offered little in terms of excitement, as the Champions (7-3, 5-0 region) jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter behind two rushing touchdowns by senior running back Andrew Blitzke, including an explosive 51-yard touchdown run straight through the heart of the Alhambra defense.

After Alhambra (2-8, 1-4) snagged an interception and long return on the next Cesar Chavez possession, Lions wide receiver Tony Miller made a great adjustment in the end zone to catch an 18-yard touchdown from quarterback Andrew Favela.

All of Alhambra’s momentum was snapped on the next play, however, with Cesar Chavez senior Shay Guidry returning the ensuing kickoff 82 yards to extend the Chavez lead to 28-6.

Wide receiver Thairyk Blue helped put the game away with two touchdown catches, finishing the night with 185 receiving yards. It was a record-breaking night for Blue, as his big night helped him set the records for the most career touchdowns and receiving yards in Cesar Chavez history, as well as the most receiving touchdowns in a single season.

His quarterback, Josh Garcia, finished the night with four passing touchdowns.

“It was a great, hard-fought game on both sides,” Garcia said. “Overall, our team needs to continue to grow and improve for the playoffs. I am hoping our linemen can continue to improve their technique as they have been doing, and our receivers are learning more plays to use against our opponents. And with the quarterbacks, I can do a better job of scanning the field, so we all have stuff that we want to work on.”

Not to be outdone, Blitzke added a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cap his senior night with more than 100 yards rushing to go along with his three scores.

The bruising tailback was just one of several seniors making their final appearance on the Cesar Chavez football field, and the Champions could not have envisioned a better sendoff for their graduating players.

After the game, Cesar Chavez coach Manuel Alcantar commended his group of seniors with how well they played in their final home game.

“I’m going to miss all those guys, they left a good legacy,” Alcantar said. “We have some great athletes that are leaving, and with guys like Thairyk Blue who threw up a lot of records for us, you don’t really replace a guy like that. That’s just part of the game, you have to reload and find guys that will step up, but we’ll be all right.”
