383-21. That is the Cesar Chavez freshman football team’s combined score against all opponents this season including Wednesday night’s 58-0 drubbing of Trevor Browne.

The Champions (8-0) have pitched three straight shutouts with the win Wednesday. Those games ended 54-0, 54-0 and 58-0 respectively. Cesar Chavez has been putting up Arena Football-like-numbers this season.

They have cracked 60 points twice and have broken 50 points three times as well.

The Champions are led by coach Gilbert Porche, and this season marks at least his fourth at the helm. The players said he is the real key to making the team as successful as possible.

“He tells us to stay focused and to stay active – nd to fight, fight, fight,” running back Oliver Walker said. “He tells us to start early and never stop playing hard.”

Walker is a key role in the run game, which makes-up most of the Champions’ offense (and almost all other freshman level offenses). He scored twice in the second half and had two would-be touchdowns called back to penalties as well.

According to MaxPreps since 2015 Cesar Chavez’s freshman teams have gone a combined 29-4, and all those teams were coached by Porche. The stats speak for themselves, but perhaps the key to the stranglehold they’ve held on the freshman scene is the preparation that begins early in the year.

“We start early,” Porche said. “We got guys lifting weights in February and March, April and May we’re doing a passing league all summer. These guys have played 60-70 games in the summer and didn’t lose a game all year, and we roll it right in [to the regular season].”

The size advantage is evident on the field it feels like the offensive and defensive lines are forklifting their opposition out of the way. Trevor Browne did not have a single positive play in the second half Wednesday.

Also aiding the Champions is the tight-knit bond that each of the players share together.

“They’re brothers,” Porche said. “Most of them have been playing together since they were young on the same feeder teams. Everyone comes out to practice, and nobody misses. It’s a real tight group.”

With a group of young players, it is sometimes easy for them to become complacent and overlook their opponents, especially when they have been wining every game by an average of around 45 points. However, Porche makes sure the team’s collective head does not balloon from all the success.

“Our coaches always tell us our next team is talented,” quarterback Xavier Castillo said. “Always go in with a positive mentality and don’t get caught.”

The team travels well too. Trevor Browne is a 20-minute drive away from Cesar Chavez, however with the 6 p.m. kickoff the commute time more than doubled thanks to rush-hour. Despite that the Cesar Chavez’ fans more than doubled Trevor Browne’s attendance and they were vocal all game long.

With only one more game left against Alhambra, the Champions will look to finish the year undefeated for the first time since 2015.

As for the advice going into that game or any game it is simple yet effective.

“Don’t get popped in the mouth,” Castillo said.
