Preview - Peoria @ Cactus

The Cobras of Cactus High School are set to take on the Panthers from Peoria in a rivalry match-up familiar to many. What once began as a yearly battle was dismantled for six years as both teams competed in different divisions. But in 2007 the teams met again on the gridiron. What this game represented to both the team in green and gold and columbia and silver meant more than just a W in the win column.
Peoria head coach Doug Clapp said he believed even though both Cactus and Peoria were not competing in the same division for that short time, they should have played the game because it was such an event for the community.
Cactus head coach Larry Fetkenhier said for his team playing in this game against Peoria rewards the team with pride in the community and the tradition the game brings.
While the Cobras have only competed in one game this season, it was a convincing win over the Moon Valley Rockets 53-0. Cactus had an extra week to prepare for the Panthers as they were given an early-season bye. The rest could potentially steal the momentum gained from the previous win, but with a rivalry game on the line the decision will be made on the adrenaline and heart of the players.
Fetkenhier believes the key to the game will be the battle to control the line of scrimmage. While Clapp said his team must control their emotions, because in a game such as this, players can get too hyped. He said the kicking game is always a crucial part and then the turnovers.
“We can’t have turnovers on offense and need to create them on defense,” Clapp said.
The Cobras have a healthy roster set for tomorrow’s game, while the Panthers lost offensive lineman Iyan Garza in their 43-0 win over Moon Valley. Peoria heads into the game with a 1-1 record after falling to the Apollo Hawks in week one, 24-13.
