Naia Stewart adds youth to experienced squad

Naia Stewart admits it.
“Playing varsity as a freshman is scary,” Stewart said. “I love the game and I know my teammates will do anything they can to help me be the best that I can be.”
Stewart, the first freshman to make varsity since 2014, is learning on the spot at Gilbert.
Junior outside hitter Aubrey Lines has developed a strong relationship with Stewart. She’s her mentor.
“She’s someone I just instantly clicked with,” Stewart said. “She has the experience and insight I need to improve.”
Stewart has led the Tigers (11-11) in kills in multiple games this year, showing off her impressive vertical and dexterity along with her ability to capitalize on her opportunities when helping orchestrate the offense.
But Stewart wants to improve on the defensive side.
“Coach plays a huge part in helping me learn in areas where I’m weak,” Stewart said. “His main focus has been to help me with my speed and blocking.”
Not long ago, Stewart was competing in junior high.
“I enjoy the talent level and pace of the game at the high school level significantly more than the pace of play in junior high,” Stewart said.
