Marcos de Niza defeats McClintock, improves to 4-1

Marcos de Niza's volleyball team kept its winning ways alive Wednesday night after securing its second straight sweep by beating McClintock, 25-6, 25-8, 25-19.
With the win, the Padres improved to 4-1 and pick up their third sweep of the season.
Even though Elyse Olson, who leads the team in kills, began the game on the bench the Padres had no problem scoring early and often. After going down 0-2 in the first set, Marcos de Niza took off on a 22-1 run to take a commanding lead and the Padres didn’t look back from there.
"We want to play at our level the whole time." said Marcos de Niza head coach Melissa Yee. "We have a high expectation and it doesn’t matter who our opponent is, we want to play at our level and any time an opponent scores our main goal is to answer back and to keep our own runs going.”
The momentum the Padres built up in the first set carried over to the second set as they once again went on a run and took a 14-1 lead behind sophomore outside hitter Kelsi Dewaard, who came off the bench and made a huge impact while serving.
McClintock was able to generate a little bit more offense in the third set but they could never string together more than a couple points at a time, a problem they endured all night.
One of the key reasons for that was the success that the Padres had while serving. Marcos de Niza is known for being a strong serving team and Yee believes that it is a big part of why her team beat McClintock.
“When we are serving well we score a lot of points, and so that’s what our main goal is," Yee said. "I tell them if we serve good we will go on big runs and that’s what we did. We were able to get our serves in and go on runs to keep them off balance.”
The Padres will be back in action Thursday as they take on the 2-9 Apache Junction Prospectors at home. This match will serve as the final tuneup before the team heads to the Tournament of Champions this weekend.
