MARANA

Marana is one of only five undefeated teams from Southern Arizona and the Tigers have been doing it on offense, averaging over 32 points a game in the four victories. As expected, senior standout Trenton Bourguet is leading the way with 1.031 yards passing and nine TDs.

Bourguet (6-0, 170) is on a near record-setting clip this year with almost 258 yards a game in his quest to challenge for the top spot in Southern Arizona as far as career passing yards go. Former Catalina Foothills standout Rhett Rodriguez (2013-2016) holds the current record for the Tucson area with 8,694 career passing yards. At his current pace, Bourguet would need to make it to the 5A championship game to break that record.

Tucson Career Passing Leaders
Rhett Rodriguez, Catalina Foothills 8,694 (2013-16)

Andrew Cota, Sunnyside/Salpointe, 7,554 (2010-13)

Reggie Robertson, Sahuaro 7,106 (1996-99)

Brian Chason, Tucson Christian: 6,408 (1982-85)

Trenton Bourguet, Marana: 6,163 (2015-present)

Former Horizon standout Dalton Sneed (2011-2014) holds the 5A record with 8,377 career passing yards. Bourguet would need to make it to the semifinal round to set the new state 5A record. At any rate, Bourguet is already one of the most proficient passers in Southern Arizona history.

The Tigers are also averaging 184 yards rushing with Sr. Xoeius Ratliffe (6-0, 172) leading the way with 358 yards. Bourguet has 276 yards rushing. So. WR Isaiah Roebuck (5-11, 185) is pulling down 80 yards a game, Sr. Diego Miranda (6-0, 175) has 69 receiving yards a game and Jr. Coben Bourguet (6-1, 165) has 44 yards a game.

Senior LB T.J. Cephers (6-1, 210) is leading the team with 28 tackles and Sr. LB David Bertelsen (5-10, 185) has 25. Coben Bourguet has two interceptions.

Marana will get a bye week before beginning region play against Buena (2-1) at home on Sept. 28.

WILLIAMS FIELD

Williams Field (3-1) fell to Chaparral in the first round of the 5A playoffs last year, one season after winning it all. The Black Hawks opened up the season with a 49-21 loss at Norco, California in a game that they led 14-6 after the first quarter and went into halftime tied up at 21-21. Senior QB Zack Shepherd (6-2, 185) threw for 210 yards in the loss and has 653 on the year.

Shepherd has 5,259 career passing yards and has caught the eye of Brown University. Junior RB Kendrix Lurry (5-11, 175) leads the team with 80 yards an outing and So. Myles Taylor (6-0, 162) and Sr. Elijah Reed (5-10, 175) are Shepherd’s two main passing targets.

Junior LB Sam Hancock (6-0, 210) is averaging almost ten tackles a game and Sr, OLB Trey Washburn is right behind him. The Black Hawk defense has pulled down eight interceptions in four games and the secondary will be on the prowl once again, knowing Bourguet will letting the ball fly. Bourguet only has two interceptions this year but the Tigers have not faced a team with a high rate of takeaways like the Black Hawks. Only Casa Grande and Liberty have more interceptions on the year (9).

There will be no rest for the Black Hawks with Casteel (3-1) visiting on Sept. 21 to open up play in the 5A San Tan Region.
