The Saguaro Sabercats ran away with a 59-28 victory over the Desert Mountain Wolves to move their record to 3-1 this season.

Fresh off of a rough win over Helix (Calif.) in which Tyler Beverett threw three interceptions, the Sabercats came ready to play. Beverett completed 10 of his 16 passing attempts for 205 yards and a whopping five touchdowns.

“I did not have a great week last week, but I wanted to change that,” Beverett said, “I just had the confidence tonight and the mentality that I was going to ball out.”

Desert Mountain jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter thanks to a 72-yard completion from Kedon Slovis to Vince Ellison down the right sideline.

“We have been practicing that play all week, preparing for that defense. Once we got the look we wanted, we made the play,” Slovis said.

However, Saguaro quickly countered with a methodical drive down the field to force a tie game.

It was at this point in the game that the Desert Mountain Wolves reached the turning point and lost all momentum after a failed fourth down conversion deep in Saguaro territory.

The Sabercats capitalized on the opportunity and took a 28-7 lead early in the second quarter.

One of those touchdowns was scored by Israel Benjamin on a 20-yard run. Benjamin racked up 185 yards on 13 carries, and added two touchdowns to his performance behind a fairly young offensive line.

“I cannot be scared to run. I think I can score every run, so that is my mindset,” Benjamin said, “Playing against teams like Liberty and Helix really helped mold us as a team. With that said, we took these guys seriously and made sure to execute on offense.”

Kedon Slovis took the game into his own hands with 37 seconds remaining in the first half and capped off a 12-yard run with a touchdown to bring the lead to two scores.

“Slovis is the real deal. There is a reason he is committed to the University of Southern California,” said Saguaro’s head coach Jason Mohns.

However, against a powerhouse team like Saguaro, there was just too much time left on the clock.

A quick connection between Beverett and Matt Polk put the Sabercats in position for a field goal, giving Saguaro a  31-14 halftime lead.

After a failed onside kick, Saguaro started the half in great field position. Just like Beverett did every other quarter, the senior quarterback threw for a touchdown on his first completion of the quarter.

Desert Mountain showed some signs of life soon after, forcing their way down the field and scoring a touchdown thanks to a 7-yard pass from Slovis. However, they only went for the point after attempt leaving the score at 38-21.

Saguaro refused to sit down and let the Wolves back into the game, leaving the starters out on the field and putting up two more touchdowns to build a 52-21 lead.

Desert Mountain and Saguaro both scored late touchdowns, making the final score 59-28.

After the last touchdown, Slovis finished with 283 passing yards, completing 23 passes out of his 40 attempts. He threw for two touchdowns as well as two interceptions, but also ran for 64 yards on eight carries with one rushing touchdown.

The loss moves Desert Mountain to 0-4 on the season, with league play fast approaching.
