Mountain View's Erick Bahn watches the flight of his game-winning hit to left that allowed the Toros to ege Hamitlon 6-5 in 8 innings on Tuesday night in the 6A state tournament.
Mesa schools comprised half of the final eight in this year's 6A state baseball tournament and still have half the field now that it has been pared to four.
#11 Skyline defeated #14 Brophy for the second time in the tournament to reach the semifinals and #1 Mountain Viiew had to battle more than 2 1/2 hours on Tuesday to finally beat #8 Hamilton in a postseason game rallying for a 6-5 win in eight innings. Both games were played at Diablo Stadium.
Mountain View's Erick Bahn lined his third hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to plate the winning run. Relief pitcher Dallas Wise, who earned the decision with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, singled with one out in the eighth. Mountain View advances to the semifinals for the first time since 1998 when it last one a state title. The Toros play #5 Mountain Ridge on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Diablo. They must beat the Mountain Lions Friday and again Saturday to return to the title game.
After Tyler Barnes ground out sharply to first and advanced Wise to second, Bahn ripped a solid hit to left to plate Wise and send the Toros' bench scurrying to the field to mob Bahn on the base paths. It was Mountain View's first win in a playoff game against Hamiitlon after four previous tries, including last week's 8-1 loss.
Mountain View used four pitchers and pitching-strapped Hamitlon rode senior Trey Goodrich for six innings in just his fourth start of the season. Goodrich didn't have a 1-2-3 inning, but was more than serviiceable in his start, scattering eight hits, recording eight strikeouts and walking two. Reliever Hayden Baker pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for Hamilton, but Bahn was able to win it belting a 2-1 offering solidly to left.
Mountain View's 7-8-9 hitters - Wise, Barnes and Bahn were 6 for 11 with four runs scored and four RBI. Michael Brueser had two doubles and Isaiah Adams had two hits to pace Hamilton's offense, which manufactured runs in four innings.
#11 SKYLINE 6, #14 BROPHY PREP 3: Cole Yocum beat Brophy for the second time in a week and Eric Olson delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the third inning as the Coyotes eliminated the Broncos at Diablo Stadium. Yocum has pitched three of Skyline's four wins this postseason.
Skyline advances to the semifinals and plays unbeaten #7 Sandra Day O'Connor on Friday at 4 p.m. at Diablo. Skyline must beat SDO twice (Saturday also) to reach the championship game. This is Skyline's deepest run at state in baseball in its two-decade history.
Olson was 2-2 with three RBI and cleanup hitter Tyler Jackson was 3 for 3 and scored twice. Yocum also had two hits in the leadoff spot. Yocum worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and fanned five. He gave up both runs. Zach Wells finished for Yocum with 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Trey Weinstein had two hits for Brophy. Johnny Dowse, Sean Cooper and Michael Diaz had RBI for the Broncos.
