Hamilton softball is living up to its press clippings.
No doubt about that after the Huskies finished off a 7-0 run at the 21st annual Desert Mountain Tournament with a 19-0 victory over Pinnacle in the championship bracket title game. About a half hour earlier, Hamilton knocked off Cactus, 12-0, in the semifinals. It's the second year in row Hamilton (16-1) has won the tournament. The Huskies are two-time defending big-school champions with a lineup and bench loaded with Division I-to-be players. Pinnacle is much the same, perhaps a few less.
PInnacle (13-4), which was 6-1 in the tournament, dug deep and went deep to earn a spot in the title game scoring four runs in its final at-bat with two outs and noone on to edge Centennial, 8-6. Taylor Fawcett blasted a walk-off, three-run homer to left to net the Pioneers their third title-game berth in a row.
Madi Link gutted out a complete-game victory in the circle for Pinnacle against Centennial, getting the call from the junior varsity. She ended up starting the title game, but two innings against Hamilton's aggressive, potent lineup was enough for one day for the freshman, who surrendered seven runs.
A 19-hit attack in only four innings of hitting put a bow on Hamilton's offensive prowess. It took place against a handicapped Pinnacle lineup that was without its top two pitchers and hitters in senior Marissa Schuld and sophomore Morgan Smith.
Smith was out of town and missed the last two days of the tournament. Schuld suffered a hip injury while pitching earlier in the tournament and was unable to play Saturday. She could miss several weeks of action. Schuld was last year's state Gatorade player of the year with a huge year hitting and pitching for the Pioneers.
The euphoria for Pinnacle from the Fawcett game-winner quickly dissipated after the first inning plus against Pinnacle's nemesis -- the Huskies. Hamiiton scored three runs in the first with Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza highlighting the inning with a two-run homer. The Huskies added four more runs in the second and 11 in the third sending 16 batters to the plate. Hamilton outscored its opponents in the tournament, 71-7.
"With our lineup and the way they are going I didn't want to back them off," Hamilton coach Rocky Parra said as his starters logged four at-bats in three innings. "They were aggressive and all doing good things. Our hitting was doing it and our pitching was doing it this week.
Hamilton outscored its opponents in the tournament , 71-7. The top all-around hitter for the week for the Huskies and for that matter any team was catcher Macy Simmons. Simmons was a sizzling 15 for 24 (.625) with five home runs and 22 RBI. She was 4 for 4 in the title game.
"She (Macy) is seeing the ball well," Parra said. "Doesn;t matter right now if they throw slow or hard. She's attacking it."
Ali Ashner was 3 for 5 with five RBI and Vasquez-Inzunza 2 for 4 with 4 RBI vs. Pinnacle.
Pitching came down to senior Abby Andersen (three wins) and freshman Loganne Stepp (three wins). Both pitched two shutouts and neither gave up more than five hits in any of their starts. Stepp threw two shutouts and Andersen one. Sophomore Katelyn Woodard got the other win in short appearance.
