Strength in numbers from a new group of skill-position players and an all-around effort won out Saturday in the small-school half of the 6th annual Sollenberger Kickoff Classic at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Moapa Valley (Overton, Nev.) picked up the pace on both sides of the ball halfway through the second period and held off a late score by Show Low to post a 28-26 victory.
A trio of players scored touchdowns for Moapa Valley, which lost its entire array of starting skill players from last year to graduation. Running back Sean McConnell, who scored the Pirates first TD, tallied their final one with 3:45 left to play. That capped a 21-0 run from the seven-minute mark of the second period that turned back Show Low's 20-7 lead. It made for a joyous day for Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis in the Arizona-Nevada showdown.
"We really don't have one single weapon, just a group of guys," Lewis said. "In the second half our offense did a good job controlling the clock. The defense made sure in the second half they knew where No. 4 was."
No. 4 Lewis referred to was the lone game-breaker Show Low returned from 2010 -- receiver Josh Weeks. Weeks showed he remains plenty potent.
The 6-foot-4 205-pound senior, totaled 219 all-purpose yards in the first half igniting Show Low's offense at receiver and at quarterback. He scored all three of Show Low's touchdowns on a 16-yard reverse, a 44-yard reception and a 35-yard TD run as quarterback.
Weeks was a non-factor in the second half until the Cougars final drive of the game. He hauled in a short pass that ended up being a 29-yard gain and set up the final score of the game that pulled Show Low to within 28-26. The Cougars try for two points failed as quarterback Zach Winn's pass slipped through the outstretched hands of Cody Tenny. Weeks finished with 324 all-purpose yards, including 105 rushing and 139 receiving on 10 catrches.
"We had a couple plays where we just did not execute," Show Low coach Randy Ricedorff said. "I'm proud of our kids for fighting back late.....
"They ran the ball well. We didn't play defense as well as I thought we could. After scrimmaging Maryvale and then this game, it's a wake-up call. We'll get better."
Moapa Valley, which limited Show Low to 111 yards of offense in the second half and possessed the ball twice as long as the Cougars, took the lead for the first time with 1:28 left in the third period. The Pirates' 21-20 lead came via a 64-yard march that took seven minutes off the clock. A 12-yard TD pass from Dakota Watters to Jacob Rebman capped the march. The big play of the drive was a 40-yard catch and run on a middle screen from Watters to Conner Mortensen.
Watters played a solid game at quarterback for Moapa Valley. He completed 4-of-7 passes for 125 yards and a TD. Conner Mortenen finished with 83 yards on 18 carries and McConnell had 66 yards on 10 attempts..
"This win is right up there (with a state championship)," Lewis said. "Coming in not being a state champion, we weren't expected to win. I'm really proud of the entire effort."
