In sports, senior night is all about honor and spreading the wealth. The Brophy Broncos more than shared the wealth Tuesday.
Nine different players scored with five of the seniors in a 77-64 victory over Saint Mary's that locked up the No. 1 seed for the 6A playoffs.
“That’s huge for us,” said senior guard Ian Burke. “We’re very much a team. We don’t have those one or two guys [who rack up all the points]. I think when we’re at our best we have a lot of different guys scoring and defending.”
Burke led the Broncos 16 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists. Senior forward Jaxson Baker contributed 14 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Both players had 10 points through the end of the first half.
“When we’re playing well all together and everybody’s getting buckets and getting in the game I think that’s when we’re most deadly,'' said Baker. "We have a lot of key parts to our team.”
Seniors Xavier Juniel and Colin Besh got in on the action with Juniel dropping 13 points and Besh posting nine. Junior Marques White also added 11 points.
Brophy led Saint Mary’s 39-25 at halftime, but the Broncos took over in the third quarter. They outscored Saint Mary's 23-12 with eight of the 12 coming with under two minutes remaining in the quarter.
“I felt like we defended a lot better in the third quarter, which I think always generates our offense pretty well,” said Brophy head coach Matt Hooten.
The Knights cut the lead in the fourth quarter, scoring a 27 points. It wasn't enough to take down the state’s No. 1 ranked team but Saint Mary’s became the seventh team to score 60 or more points against the Broncos this season.
Hooten, however, didn’t stress about his team’s fourth quarter performance.
“We just have to shore some things up,” said Hooten. “They had a couple kids who hit some shots as well. You can’t keep people bottled up all game long, but we’ve got to do a better job of staying in front, forcing difficult shots and then rebounding.”
Brophy finished th regular season with a 24-1 record, while staying undefeated in league play at 8-0.
The team now switches its goals to postseason play, which begins next week. Burke and Baker feel that despite the higher stakes, the mentality stays the same.
“I think our focus has to change a little bit, we need to be a little more detail-oriented,” said Burke. “But we just have to focus on the next game, because right now next game is the most important one.”
Added Baker: “I think naturally we’ll all be a little more focused, with it being one-and-done, playoff time. But this whole year our mentality has been the next game, focusing on the next game. I think we can even go a little deeper into that, focusing on winning the next quarter.”
The Broncos will host their opening playoff game Feb. 13.
