Campo Verde eliminated Shadow Ridge for a 5A state playoff berth last year via sweep in a play-in match.

This year both were on hand for a first-round state match and the result was pretty much identical. Campo Verde never trailed in the first two sets, but the Coyotes played from behind in the third and showed some moxie in doing so to finish off a sweep, 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 at Campo Verde High.

Campo Verde (22-17) advances to Thursday's quarterfinals where it faces No. 2 Sunnyslope. Sunnyslope advanced with a sweep of Verrado. Campo lost a regular-season match to Sunnyslope, 3-1 back in early September. Shadow Ridge finished the season 20-12.

Campo Verde was led by junior outside hitter Caitlin Dugan. Dugan led the attack with 16 kills and defensively with 13 digs. Right side Hattie Patton checked in with nine kills and Sadie Udall had six.

Sophomore setter Jordyn Campbell registered 30 assists and 12 digs before leaving mid-set in the third with an ankle injury. Campbell left the gym on crutches and is the second setter the team has lost to injury. Patton moved from right side to setter to finish the match. Libero Brihanna Healy aided the defense with eight digs.

"We played pretty well, with a few kinks here or there," Campo Verde coach Tayler Bader said. "W'ere not sure what we will do next with both our setters out. We'll have to see. The good thing was we were able to keep the team together in the third se and keep it from going to a fourth."

Shadow Ridge got the jump on Campo in the third set and by mid-set was up 14-9. Campo refocused and put forth a 7-0 run  - the stretch it lost Campbell to injury. The third set was tied six times down the stretch and Shadow Ridge held a 23-22 lead and the serve. A pair of kils by Udall sandwiched around an ace from Patton sent the Stallions home for the season.
