Arcadia's team moms lend their support

September 19, 2017 by Marenis Kansfield, Arizona State University

Arcadia High’s football team is still hungry for a victory but little else thanks to the behind-the-scenes efforts of the Arcadia team moms.

The Arcadia mothers do everything they can to support the team and are extremely proactive in preparing the team every week.

Coach Tony Stillings counts the team moms as one of his many blessings since his move to Arcadia.

“Honestly, the moms have been one of the biggest stress relievers since the season began,” said Stillings. “They prepare the team every week the only way that a mom could.”

The Titan’s moms are an organized group and relays jobs to every mother for every week of the season.

Cathy Ellington is one of the longtime team moms and rotates her job every week like many other women associated with the team.

“We have about 15-20 moms available every week and what a lot of the moms do, including myself, is serve the boys meals throughout the week for after practices and before games,” said Ellington, “Usually, we contact companies for sponsorships and we get meals from different restaurants that sponsor us.”

Luke Ashworth, a senior captain, makes sure the team shows appreciation.

“All the moms basically do everything for us if you can believe that. We get the guys to say thanks for everything that they do because I don’t think we could play to our best abilities without them,” said Ashworth.

Arcadia’s moms go beyond the usual cleaning and meal prep. They’re also in charge of the team’s communication and social media.

“There is usually someone in charge of communication and they deliver schedules and news to the school and other parents,” said Ellington, “All of these women are extremely intelligent and some run things like the team website, social media pages and graphic designing.”

The banners that line Arcadia’s home field were designed by the moms as well as some of the workout gear the players wear every day.

Marq Wilkerson, a senior wide receiver, said, “A lot of the stuff we wear and a lot of other artistic things were put together by our moms.”

Although a football mom’s work goes unnoticed by many, they still impact the team as a whole.

“It’s all behind the scenes but it’s completely worth loving and supporting the boys any way we can because that’s what it’s all about,” said Ellington
