Queen Creek looks to run past Deer Valley

The Queen Creek Bulldogs take on the Deer Valley Skyhawks at 7 p.m. Friday in Queen Creek.
The Bulldogs (4-0) are looking to remain undefeated, while the Skyhawks (1-2) are looking to get back to .500.
“You’re playing for playoff positions throughout the whole year,” Queen Creek Coach Travis Schureman said. “So to get a win (your record) goes to 5-0, which keeps you on a good path.”
Despite a 42-21 victory for Queen Creek over Deer Valley last season, Schureman expects a good match-up this year.
“It’s a pretty big task for us up front,” Schureman said. “We’re just going to try to stay within our assignments and not try to do too much. If we could just play fundamental football and do the thing that we’re capable of doing, we’ll be alright.”
Senior running back Dante Coleman said the team has been working on keeping things simple in practice this week.
“We have the tools we need in order to win tonight,” Coleman said. “We don’t have to do anything special tonight.”
The Skyhawks’ defense is averaging more sacks per game than the Bulldogs. However, Deer Valley Coach Eric Bolus said he doesn’t expect Queen Creek to rely on its passing game.
Looking at the film, Queen Creek tends to rely on its run game, Bolus said.
For the Skyhawks’ defense to be up to the challenge. Bolus’ strategy is to work Queen Creek to as many third and longs as possible.
“If we don’t stop the run, we’re going get gassed, and it’s going be a long night for all of us,” he said. “So it’s just about them accepting the challenge to stop the run.”
