Queen Creek grad Brzeczek covets playing final BB twinbill

Adam Brzeczek is preparing for his final high school baseball experience this weekend. A doubleheader that rewards him for the entire high school experience -- academics and extra-curricular activities.

Brzeczek, a Queen Creek High standout in football and baseball, plays for the 4A-I South in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association all-star game Saturday night at 7 at Surprise Stadium. He''ll have to rise early Sunday for the next game for the preparation and participation on the East squad in the AzBCA Academic all-star game at the same venue at 6 p.m.. Both games involve his ability to play the game, but the second -- as its name suggests -- goes more to the core of the school experience.

"My parents always told me I could get a good (college) education if  I worked hard and got good grades," Brzeczek said. "I wanted to play sports, but there are more possibilities for that if you take care of academics."

Brzeczek took care of academics. The evidence is where he'll head to college in August -- Stanford -- he will be a football walk-on and try to make the Cardinals as a quarterback. His intention, initially, is to to major in human biology.

Brzeczek, who played three years of varsity football and baseball at Queen Creek, is most proud of his participation in Sunday's all-star game. In his Queen Creek baseball career he posted nearly a composite .400 batting average.

"It's tough to get in to a good school and I worked hard all through school to get and keep good grades," Brzeczek said. "I think being in the academic all-star game does mean more to me. I don't think anybody in the academic game has a GPA less than 4.0. ....

"I'm excited about that game. The regular one will be fun, too, but the guys in the academic game will be in the same boat as me."

A typical day for Brzeczek his senior year began with his first class at 7:30 a.m, one of four honors classes he took. During football season he had a few hours between practice (usually starting at 6 p.m.) and used that time to work on homework. Practice lasted from 6 to 9. He finished school work at home after practice, often staying up to midnight.

"The days were busy and long," Brzeczek said. "It was a little easier in between football and baseball (season), but I would work on transitioning of throws (football to baseball) so I'd still put in a lot of time after school when neither sport was going."

With Queen Creek's baseball season ending the first week of May with a playoff loss, Brzeczek turned his attention back to football. He's been working out, throwing and lifting to prepare for Stanford football on Aug. 7. A coaching change that saw Jim Harbaugh leave Stanford for the NFL and the San Francisco 49ers, left Brzeczek a bit unsettled.

"The coaching change is going to work out," Brzeczek said. "I think the coach (David) Shaw is more receptive than coach Harbaugh was so it's still a nice situation. "I'm more geared to play football right now, but I can get out there and play a couple more baseball games. I'm looking forward to it."
