Top-seed Bourgade Catholic and #2 Benson kept to the script on Saturday in the 2A state softball tournament. So did the 1A top seeds -- #1 Ray and #2 Superior.
All lived up to their seedings with Bourgade defeating #4 Camp Verde, 8-2, and Benson trimming #6 San Manuel, 2-0, at Rose Mofford Sports Complex. Bourgade and Benson play for the 2A title on Monday May 8 at 7:30 at ASU's Farrington Stadium.
Bourgade's Daisy Hernandez whacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning off Camp Verde pitcher Jacy Finleyto rally the Eagles from a 2-0 deficit. Finley had given Camp Verde the lead with her two-run HR in the top of the second.
Bourgade broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from Mallory McDowell and Bre Soltero. Rachael Hammans had four hits to lead Bourgade from the leadoff spot. McDowell pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and letting her defense make plays. She struck out two and her teammates committed only one error.
Benson rode the five-hit pitching of Katie Sherman to its win over San Manuel. Sherman fanned eight and did not walk a batter. Makayla Wales RBI single in the fourth was the key hit in the Bobcats scoring both their runs that inning. Wales and Ashleigh Davis had two hits each for Benson. San Manuel's Nikki Baldenegro was the tough-luck loser. She scattered nine hits, walked two and fanned 12.
