Pinnacle watched Basha rally from behind three times Wednesday in their 6A baseball playoff game. When the seventh inning arrived, the Pioneers decided to stage a comeback of their own.
James Wicker's RBI single in the top of the seventh capped a two-run rally that lifted No. 8 Pinnacle to a 9-8 victory over the top-seeded Bears at Diablo Stadium.
Basha (24-4-1) rallied four times last Saturday to pull out a 9-8 extra-inning win over Valley Vista. The Bears came close to duplicating that again in the round of the elite eight, coming back from 2-0, 4-2 and 7-4 deficits to tie or take the lead. Pinnacle (23-7), however, stole Basha's thunder in this one.
Basha's Michael Perzan, who pitched out of an sixth-inning, base-loaded jam to a preserve an 8-7 lead, got the first out of the seventh. Four hits and a walk combined to net Pinnacle two runs for the lead. Devin Bonadeo's single tied the game for a final time at 8 -- a couple batters before Wicker delivered the game winner.
Junior Ty Woessner, who notched a save in Pinnacle's opening-round 3-2 win over Sandra Day O'Connor, picked up the win this time. Woessner settled down from a shaky beginning when he allowed an unearned run, a couple of walks and double in Basha's four-run fifth.
Woessner fanned three of the last four batters. He struck six in three innings of relief. Pinnacle advances to the winner's bracket semis against either Corona del Sol Boulder Creek on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Diablo Stadium.
Pinnacle's Jake Holmes had two hits, including a home run to open the game and scored twice. Marino Pugnetti was 2-for 2 with three RBI, Jason Marshall 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Gabe Workman 2-4 with a home run and double.
#6 PERRY 8, #3 MOUNTAIN RIDGE 1: The Pumas built a lead early a run at a time and then erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Mountain Lions at Maryvale Ball Park.
Buddy Brownlee pitched six strong innings to hold Mountain Ridge's offense in check. Brownlee allowed six hits, walked none and struck out five. Perry collected 14 hits off three Mountain Ridge pitchers.
Ty Gulley and Vinnie Peralta had three hits each to lead the attack. Jacob Tanaka, Matty Brown and Coleman Roberts had two hits apiece. Tanaka and Brown drove in two runs apiece.
Perry advances to the winner's bracket semis to play Hamilton on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Maryvale Ball Park. Mountain Ridge plays Horizon on Friday in an elimination game at 4 p.m. at Maryvale Park.
#10 HAMILTON, #2 HORIZON: Cole Bellinger, JD McLaughlin and Jacob Thiele laced consecutive RBI hits in the fifth inning rallying Hamilton past Horizon at Maryvale Ball Park.
Bellinger pitched a complete game along with his key hit in the fifth. Danny Berger knocked in all three Horizon runs with a single and sacrifice fly.
#5 CORONA DEL SOL 4, #13 BOULDER CREEK 2: The Aztecs (22-6) scored four runs in the sixth inning parlaying two hits, two walks and two errors for their rally that edged the Jaguars (18-15) at Diablo Stadium.
A throwing error on chopper up the first baseline gave Corona the tying and go-ahead runs for a 3-2 lead and Gehrig Sanchez's sacrifice fly capped the inning.
Matt Novis pitched a perfect 1 2/3 innings of relief with three strikeouts to earn the victory. Jacob Clemens had two hits and it was his chopper that Boulder Creek misplayed that put Corona in front for the first time.
