8 records fall at 77th Chandler Rotary Track/Field Invite

There was something for everyone in the form of meet records on Saturday at the 77th Chandler Rotary Track and Field Invitational at Chandler High's Austin Field.

Eight meet records were set in the elite portion of the invitational that kicked in mid-afternoon on Saturday - four by guys and four by gals as well as two state records (boys discus and girls 1,600-meter relay).  Be it field events, hurdles, sprints or relays. Arizona athletes contributed to six of those. The 2017 edition of the meet attracted athletes from 154 schools.

The competition of the day for boys was shot put. Three Arizona throwers heaved the shot 62 feet or better -- all would have been meet records. The best throw came from Desert Edge's Tyson Jones with a toss of 66 feet, 8 inches. That's still a couple feet shy of the state record held by North High's Dallas Long 59 years ago. Right behind Jones was Canyon del Oro's Turner Wastington (64-6) and Desert Vista's Elijah Mason (62-5).

Washington, who's best event is the discus, eclipsed the meet record he set last year and state record with a throw of 215 feet, 8 inches. Mason also bettered the 200-foot mark (201-6). Washington's old meet mark was 191-2.

The state record set by girls was Chandler High's 1,600 relay (Armani Harris, Anna Foreman, Anaya Bailey and LaMeyah Charlton). Their time of 3:47.98 was nearly three seconds better than the meet and state record.

If distance running is your favorite then Rio Rico senior Allie Schadler and Grandview High's  Aurora, CO Brie Oakley put on two outstanding races (1,600 meters and the mile). They fell just short of setting meet records in both.

Schadler edged Oakley in the 1,600 with a winning time of 4 minutes, 45.39 seconds to Oakley's 4:45.43. They also competed together in the slightly longer mile run with Oakley prevailing 4:46.97 to 4:46.98. Races don't get any closer.

Mountain Pointe's Kayleigh Conlon continued her domination of the Rotary Invite by winning the shot and discus for the second year in a row. Conlon set a meet record (one she held previously) in the discus with a throw of 150 feet, 7 inches. She also won the shot (42 feet, 1/2 inch).

The meet's outstanding athlete was Agoura High's (Aguora, CA) Tara Davis. Davis won three events and set meet records in two. Davis' meet records were in winning the 100 high hurdles in 13.50 seconds and long jump 20 feet, 10 inches breaking the mark set by Chandler's Jasmine Todd. Davis added the triple jump title falling an inch short of the meet mark with a jump of 41 feet, 4 inches. That record is still held by Todd.

Other meet records set by boys:  North Canyon's Tyrees Moulton won the 400 meters (47.15 seconds) to better the old mark of 47.38 set by Markus Wheaton. Chandler's 400 relay team of Kendon Walker, Jaheim Brown, Imani Lee and Ryan Johnson posted time of 41.48 seconds -- old record 41.64.

Other boys event winners in the elite portion of the meet: Tolleson's Trey Johnson (10.57) in the 100 and (13.65) in the 110 hurdles; Long Beach Poly's Zion Bowens (21.41) in the 200; Boulder Creek's Daniel Lozano (1:55.01) in the 800; Volcano Vista HS, Albuquerque, NM Jericho Cleveland (4:17:15) in the 1,600; Saguaro's Michael Barney (9:14/47) in the 3,200; Eleanor Roosevelt''s Anthony Easter (37:15) in the 300 hurdles; Eleanor Roosevelt HS, CA (3:19.23) in the 1,600 relay; Canyon del Oro's Cam Crandall (6-6) in the high jump; Desert Vista's Talib Mudiwa (24-3 1/4) in the long jump; Chandler's Lee (47-11 1/2) in the triple jump and Valley Vista's Cole Riddle (16-0) in the pole vault.

Other girls event winners in the elite portion of the meet: Long Beach Poly's Ariyonna Augustine (11.88) in the 100; Chandler's Bailey (24.07) in the 200; Hamilton's Morgan Parzych (56.54) in the 400; Hamilton's Melanie Loff (2:11.43) in the 800; Desert Vista's Haley Wolf (10:47.42) in the 3,200; Eleanor Roosevelt HS, CA Breanna Bernard Joseph (42.14) in the 300 hurdles; Chandler's Diamond Black, Zaire Chest, Jade Charlton and Harris (46.26) in the 400 relay; St. Mary's Quintella Johnson (5-6) in the high jump and Desert Vista's Sevanna Hanson (12-0) in the pole vault.
