Baseball: Bob Everett Classic Day 1 highlights

Carson Hoopes went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs on Saturday to help lead Mesa High to a 12-6 victory over Tempe High on the first day of  the 2nd Annual Bob Everett Baseball Classic at Mesquite High School. The tournament bolts intoh high gear on Monday with games at three sites all day long.

Hoopes laced a two-run single in the first and a bases-loaded triple to highlight a six-run, third inning that broke a 4-4 tie. Grant Letourneau added three RBi and Jacob Hanna two hits, including a solo homer. Angel Reynoso notched the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief work. Reynoso fanned six during his appearance. Pablo Villela led Tempe (2-7) with three hits and scored three times.

Mesa (6-3) also won the final game of the day, taking down McClintock, 14-10. JJ Reeves RBI single tied the game at 9 in the top of the fifth and Willy Avelar's two-run double put Mesa ahead to stay. The Jackrabbits scored six runs in the fifth to overtake McClintock (10-2).

Cody Tucker and Orlando Luna had three hits apiece against McClintock to lead an 18-hit attack. Avelar and Luna had three RBI each and Hoopes completed his big day (2-4) and one more RBI.

Mesa is 2-0, McClintock 1-1 and Tempe 0-2 in their pool play. Mesquite and Desert Ridge also are in that pool, but do not play their first games until Monday.

MCCLINTOCK 6, TEMPE 0: The Chargers Pete Lopez and Andrew Scheidecker combined to scatter seven hits and blank the Buffaloes at Mesquite High. Lopez fanned four and allowed four hits in five innings. Scheidecker finished up with two innings and fanned two. Tempe's Lorenzo Valencia led all hitters with three hits. 

BASHA 11, CASA GRANDE 1: The Bears (8-2) scored eight runs on five hits in the second inning and went on to rout the Cougars (6-4) at Mesquite. It was Casa Grande's second loss of the day as it opened the tourney with a loss to Desert Vista.

Mason Regester doubled, homered and drove in four runs, three in the second with his homer. Gage Workman added a pair of doubles and scored twice. Senior left-hander Brian Raymond worked all five innings of the run-rule contest for Basha. Raymond  allowed only one hit -- a second-inning RBI single to Memo Pinon. Raymond fanned six and did not walk a batter.

DESERT VISTA 6, CASA GRANDE 3: Josh Ripper and Gavin Fitzpatrick combined for 4  1/3 innings of hitless, shutout relief as the Thunder (5-5) scored twice in the fifth to reclaim the lead and defeat the Cougars. 

Zack Paquette's RBI ground out and a subsequent wild pitch accounted for the fifth-inning runs that put Desert Vista in command. Dylan Cuenca tacked on a extra run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Cuenca had two RBI in the game. Gil Luna doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a ran for Casa Grande.
