Seton falls at buzzer to Grandview (CO) at Nike TOC

For the second day in a row Seton Catholic matched up against an elite opponent, but this time it didn't fall the Sentinels way.
Alisha Davis followed Michaela Onyenwere's miss in the paint as the buzzer sounded Tuesday afternoon giving Grandview of Aurora, Colo. a 44-42 victory over Seton in the NIke TOC at Mesquite High School.
The loss was the first of the season for Seton (12-1) as it gradually surrendered an 11-point lead in the second half. Seton knocked off St. Francis (GA) in Monday's first round, 48-42. Grandview improved to 6-0 and advances to the semifinals of the elite (Joe Smith) bracket. Seton is now in the consolation bracket and faces Long Beach Poly on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Mesquite.
Seton, which led 25-16 at halftime and 27-16 with just less than six minutes left in the third quarter, began to see its lead ebb away thanks to the high percentage shots Grandview was able to work for and come up with the rest of the way.
Davis was the catalyst for Grandview. She scored all 12 of her points in the second half and eight in the final period. Onyenwere also tallied 12 points as did Leilah Vigil. The trio were an inside presence Seton couldn't get a handle on for 32 minutes. Jenn Wirth led Seton with 10 points, Sarah Barcello nine and Kendall Krick chipped in eight.
Seton not only lost its 11-point lead, but found itself trailing 42-37 after Onyenwere's final basket with 1:28 left to play. Seton's Barcello and Liz Holter combined to make up that difference with clutch baskets in between missed free throws by Grandview -- both the front ends of one-and-ones.
Barcello got what was a rare offensive rebound and putback and drew a foul with 50 seconds left. She made the free throw to pull Seton within 42-40.
Seton ultimately gained possession with 37 seconds left down two. Kendall Krick missed a perimeter shot, but again the Sentinels managed to control the rebound. The ball wound up in Holter's hands for an open 12-footer she connected on for a tie with 22 seconds left.
Grandview opted to run some clock and call a time out with seven seconds left to set up a final shot. That option was Onyewere driving to the basket. She pulled up for a 5-footer that rolled off the rim, but Davis was there to knock it down as time expired.
Virtually all of Grandview's points came via layups or inside of 8 feet. The Wolves sank one perimeter shot -- a three in the third period.
The news in other brackets was good for four other Arizona entries in the TOC. Mesquite rallied from six points down in the first half to score a 61-55 victory over Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in the John Anderson bracket. Mesquite matches up in the semfinals of that bracket Wednesday with Christ the King at 1:30 at Mesquite.
Chaparral and Desert Mountain advanced to semifinals in the Dan Wiley bracket. Chaparral dropped Marlborough (LA., Calif), 43-36 and Desert Mountain topped Corona del Sol, 50-29. Chaparral faces Omaha West (NE) at 1:30 at Highland High and Desert Mountain opposes Canyon (CA) at 3 at Highland High on Wednesday.
In the Mike Desper bracket, Cactus Shadows defeated Dillard (FL), 52-49, for a semifinal berth Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Mesquite HS against Bishop O'Dowd.
