Bagdad knocks off Williams for 1A title

Bagdad coach Dalton Mills was confident when last season ended and this season began the team he had in hand for 2016 had the wherewithal to be top dog. He was proved right Saturday night.
Top-seed Bagdad performed as it has all season with explosive offense and solid defense operating in tandem in conquering No. 3 Williams, 60-6, to win the 1A football title at Maricopa High School.
It's the second football title in Bagdad's history and completed an 11-0 season for the Sultans. Bagdad won its previous title in 2013. Williams, seeking its third title and first since 1993, closed the year 9-2. Both losses courtesy of Bagdad.
Two touchdowns in the last three minutes of the first half and two early TDs in the third period busted the game open. In an eight-minute span a 16-6 lead swelled to 44-6 and it ws game over.
"We've been close after 13 (2013)," Mills said., referring to a runner-up and semifinal finish in between titles "I thought this team could win it. That was our goal. Anything short of that this year would have been a failure."
Junior quarterback Israel Loveall acconted for six touchdowns. He passed for 388 yards and five TDs and rushed for one score. His scoring passes were all to senior receivers Ben Loveall (older brother), two to Jorden O'Neill and one each to Michael Mendez and Rio Delgado. Bagdad totaled 548 yards of offense. Its defense came up with five takeaways and limited Williams to 163 total yards.
Several of Bagdad's seniors were freshmen on the 2013 title team. One of them, Ben Loveall, liked this one more.
"We were on scout team and didn't have much to do with the games," Ben Loveall said. "I felt much more a part of this. The first one wasn't ours. This one is."
Bagdad's offense and defense made statements early and got better as the game progressed. The Sultans thwarted a nearly five-minute Williams drive to begin the game. On fourth down, it wrapped up Williams quarterback Martin Soria for a 2-yard loss at the 5.
Two plays later the longest play of the game put Bagdad on the board --and ahead -- where it would stay.
Israel Loveall connected with Ben Loveall for 12 yards on crossing route. Loveall outraced defenders another 78 yards to complete the 90-yard TD. The two-point conversion run by Devin Nelson made it 8-0 at the 6:23 mark of the quarter.
Williams second turnover in the first three minutes of the second period, a muffed punt, set up Bagdad at the Vikings 27. Israel Loveall capped the short march with a 12-yard TD pass to O'Neill to up the margin to 16-0.
Williams resorted to a fake punt on fourth down to get a first down on its next possesion -- a 37-yard run by Soria and scored three plays later. Running back Daniel Lopez raced 24 yards on a sweep and the Vikings were in the game at 16-6 with 6:47 to halftime.
That's when the game got away from Williams. Ben Loveall scored his second TD going 68 yards to paydirt on a reverse to make it 22-6. Israel Loveall's 12-yard TD pass to Mendez with 12 seconds to intermission made it 30-6.
Bagdad's offense marched 71 yards in six plays to begin the third period, capped by Connor Pacheco's 10 yard run. Mendez's interception set up Bagdad in Williams territory. Israel Loveall's 7-yard run put the finishing touches on that drive. Bagdad 44, Williams 6.
"We were healthier this time and I thought we had a good game plan," Williams coach Jeff Brownlee said, hoping his team would improve on the 56-22 loss back on Sept. 2. "They are a great team. So many good skill players. We met out goals. Getting here was a bonus."
