Soccer: Clemmensen leads Brophy to section title

Carter Clemmensen knows how to redeem himself. He may have bought more redemption insurance later if he needs it with his performance Tuesday night in Brophy's tussle for section supremacy.

Clemmensen's third goal of the evening -- the third scored in a frantic minute late in the second half -- lifted Brophy to a 3-2 victory over Pinnacle at Brophy's Sports Complex.

Brophy (12-5-2 overall, 11-0 power-ranking matches) and Pinnacle (20-2, 11-1 prm) entered the contest 1-2, respectively, in the Division I  power rankings. The winner earned section title honors and certainly momentum heading to the playoffs that begin next week.

A match thought to feature some scoring with two capable offenses seemed possibly headed to a 1-0 win for Pinnacle -- that via a penalty kick in the fourth minute from Pinnacle's Matt Grimes. Both teams missed chances in the first half and Brophy a few more in the first 20 minutes or so of the second half as it pushed to get the equalizer.

Brophy appeared it would tie the match sending Clemmensen, the Broncos top-scorer to the PK spot, after a tripping foul in the box on Pinnacle. Clemmensen's PK attempt was a rocket --  well above the goal with no save needed. Good omen for Pinnacle?

Nope. Clemmensen got a second chance four minutes later, this not as drab as a PK. Teammate Wyatt Dial's cross found Clemmensen in traffic and somehow the sophomore striker blasted home an acrobatic shot to gain a 1-1 tie.

"Not sure how he made that first goal," Brophy coach Noah Lewkowitz said. "He's a young player playing in a pressure situation. He came through. He's our leading scorer by far."

The tying goal was just to whet the appetitle of fans. Ten minutes passed before Clemmensen made a run on the right side and netted his second goal for Brophy's first lead, 2-1, in the 72nd minute.

Pinnacle answered a minute later as Grimes second goal -- this one a header - in the 73rd minute may have had fans thinking overtime.

Not to be. Clemmensen was lobbed a ball on the left side behind the defense perhaps 20 seconds later and he converted the game winner. Clemmensen's hat trick was his third this season.

The win was the third come-from-behind victory in the last fourmatches for Brophy. Eleven days ago the Broncos ralled from 2-0 down to beat Ironwood and had to go overtime last Friday to beat Sandra Day O'Connor, 2-1, after trailing 1-0.

"Pinnacle is a high-energy, fast team up top," Lewkowtiz said. "We like a possession style game that takes a little patience. I like that we've shown we can come back, but I'd prefer the games finish boring."

Pinnacle coach Brock Heykoop said his team needed the challenge Brophy brought.

"We had our chances in the first half to put some distance between us," Heykoop said. "We knew this would be a fight. We're having a good year. A few kids came out  this year that weren't out before and have been a nice shot in the arm. I'm proud of our effort to date."
