Girls hoops: Seton handles Flagstaff from start to finish

It was business as usual for Seton Catholic on Wednesday night as its defense and transition game spelled doom for Flagstaff in Division II girls basketball.
Seton's games haven't differed much one to another against D-II foes as its starting five spread the weallth and defense clamped down on the normally high-scoring Lady Eagles, 56-33, at Seton Catholic.
Three starters scored in double figures and a fourth fell a point short as Seton ran its record to 17-1 overall and 10-0 in power-ranking games. Sarah Barcello (13 points), Jenn Wirth (11) and LeeAnne Wirth (10) average in double figures for the season. The 6-foot-3 LeeAnne Wirth and 6-2 Jenn Wirth were even more menacing on the other end of the floor protecting in the paint. Official blocked shot totals for the pair weren't available, but it's safe to say the twins combined for double digits for that stat as well. Flagstaff, a perennial title contender under coach Tyrone Johnson, was averaging just less than 60 points a game.
"They did a great job around the basket, blocking or altering shots," Seton coach Karen Self said. "I liked the way we played defense. I would have liked to have seen us close out better. I'll have them look at the fourth quarter."
Seton got its jitters -- if there really were any -- out of the way in the first minute. The Lady Sentinels turned the ball over on their first two possessions and trailed 2-0. That was it for playing from behind as a 14-0 run ensued from there.
Seton led 16-9 after the first period and turned up the heat in the second period with its ability to score in transition. Barcello got one layup in transition and Kendall Krick (nine points) had two such baskets. All told Seton had five transition baskets in the opening half and steals by Jenn Wirth and Liz Holter finished with layups. Seton went to halftime with a 35-15 lead.
Flagstaff (14-2, 6-1 prg) suffered its only other loss at Red Mountain's holiday tournament two weeks ago to out of state Orange Lutheran. Flagstaff did good job on the boards getting its share of offensive rebounds on what was a very tough shooting night for the Lady Eagles. If their first shots weren't contested just about every second or third chance was by the Wirths. Flagstaff connected on 5 of 24 shots in the first half while Seton got lots of layups in a 15-of-26 effort from the floor in the first 16 minutes.
Seton's lead ballooned to 47-19 late in the third period, but Flagstaff kept battling and cut the lead to 18 with about six minutes left. Flag couldn't draw any closer, but didn't wave the white flag either. Shay Toehe led Flagstaff with 14 points (11 in the first half). Three of her four baskets were threes. Monique Ware, one of the Eagles top scorers, finished with nine points. Only two came in the first three quarters.
Among Seton's 17 wins are four over D-I schools. The Lady Sentinels have beaten Mesquite, Valley Vista and Highland (twice). Those are three of the top six or seven teams in D-I this season.
