Marcos de Niza fell to Saguaro 38-20 in the Division II state championship Saturday night but, at 12-3, the Padres' season can only be defined as a success.

Padre quarterback Nazareth Greer will return for his senior year as will standout kicker Krysten Muir.

Muir scored an unofficial 67 points for the Padres this season including three field goals. It is believed she is the first female kicker to score in a championship game in Arizona.

"I'm really proud of these guys, they worked so hard," Muir said after the game. "We proved we are a really good team."

Just a good team? Hardly.

A good team has one or two stars but a great team has a few superstars added in the mix and that includes Muir. Even though her father, Jeremy Muir, is an assistant coach for the Padres, Krysten beat out several boys after a stint on the JV team. Nothing was given to her. She earned her place on the field.

"I think I beat about four guys to get that spot and I'm planning on keeping it,” she added.

A captain on the Marcos de Niza soccer team, Muir was living in Las Vegas when she saw a girl kick at a high school there and that memory has never faded.

For her father, having a child on the team intensifies emotions, "It makes it hurt a little more," he said. "It makes the high points higher and the low points lower."

Obviously full of pride, her father has no worries when he sees Krysten on the field. She is as important as any other player. In fact, several assistant coaches made it a point to recognize her as their own daughter on a team full of life-long sons.

"She always does me proud," Jeremy Muir added. "She does everything right, I'm blessed. Really lucky."

Perhaps, just perhaps, there were one or two girls sitting in the stands in Arizona Stadium Saturday night wondering if they could one day be like Krysten.
