6A, 5A, 4A hash out region alignments for 2016-18

Wednesday morning's efforts by 6A, 5A and 4A conference committees charged with making region placements for the future were handled thoughfully and for the most part adequately.

Conference and the proposed region alignments will be posted on Dec. 1 and schools will have until Dec. 3 to file an appeal of their region placement to the AIA's executive board. Those appeals will be heard at the executive board's next meeting on Dec. 7. The final conference and region alignments will be posted after the Dec. 7 exectuive board meeting.

6A's stumbling block was overcome in short order as regions housing Chandler, Gilbert and Tempe district schools plus Brophy and Xavier were finalized. In keeping with having same-district schools compete in the same region, Tempe and Gilbert combined its three schools each for one region while Chandler schools plus Brophy and Xavier were placed in another.

The seven regions for 6A are as follows:  Metro: Alhambra, Central, Cesar Chavez, Maryvale, North, Trevor Browne; East Valley: Dobson, Mesa, Mountain View, Red Mountain, Skyline and Westwood. Tucson-Yuma: Cibola, Kofa, Rincon, San Luis, Sunnyside and Tucson. North: Boulder Creek, Desert Mountain, Horizon, Mountain Ridge, Pinnacle, Sandra Day O'Connor. Central: Basha, Chandler, Hamilton, Perry, Brophy, Xavier. Fiesta: Corona del Sol, Desert Ridge, Desert Vista, Gilbert, Highland, Mountain Pointe. Southwest: Copper Canyon, La Joya, Millennium, Tolleson, Valley Vista, Westview.

The 5A committee worked its way from five proposals  to essentially two and did its best to keep district schools together in the same region. 5A settled on eight regions -- Southern: Buena, Ironwood Ridge, Marana, Marana Mountain View and Cienega; Sonoran: Cholla, Desert View, Flowing Wells, Sahuaro and Poston Butte. Phoenix: Camelback, Carl Hayden, South Mountain, Betty Fairfax, Glendale, Independence.. East Valley I: Arcadia, Chaparral, North Canyon, Notre Dame and Paradise Valley. East Valley II: Campo Verde, Mesquite, Queen Creek, Vista Grande and Williams Field. Metro: Apollo, Sunnyslope, Ironwood, Raymond Kellis, Maricopa and McClintock. West: Agua Fria, Desert Edge, Verrado, Lake Havasu, Deer Valley and Goldwater. Northwest: Centennial, Liberty, Shadow Ridge, Sierra Linda, Willow Canyon.

4A had three proposals submitted and modified one to come up with an eight-region plan. Competition came into play heavily in one region, which might bring forth an appeal for excessive travel  (Apache Junction) although the competition seems right. The 4A regions as voted on: Desert Sky: Combs, Higley, Tempe, Casa Grande, Marcos de Niza and Seton Catholic. Skyline: St. Mary's, Saguaro, Shadow Mountain, Cactus Shadows, Thunderbird. Gila: Amphitheater, Pueblo, Rio Rico, Palo Verde, Douglas. West Valley: Cactus, Peoria, Sunrise Mountain, Greenway, Moon Valley. Grand Canyon: Bradshaw Mountain, Coconino, Flagstaff, Lee Williams, Mingus, Prescott, Mohave. Southwest: Buckeye, Estrella Foothills, Youngker, Yuma, Gila Ridge. Kino: Catalina Foothills, Canyon del Oro, Salpointe, Nogales, Walden Grove. Valley: Apache Junction, Dysart, Cortez, Coronado and Washington.

7 executive board meeting.
