FOOTBALL: Southern AZ Small School Preview

September 15, 2015 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365

Although all games are important, here are a couple from each division from Southern Arizona that are sure to shape the rest of the season:

DIVISION IV

Section II

Pueblo (1-2)

Thatcher (1-2)

Empire (1-2)

Catalina (0-2)

Douglas (0-3)

Santa Rita (0-3)

Palo Verde (0-4)

Section VI

Flowing Wells (4-0)

Cholla (3-0)

Rio Rico (2-2)

Walden Grove (2-1)

Pusch Ridge (2-1)

Sahuarita (0-3)

Amphitheater (0-3)

Flowing Wells (4-0) at Rio Rico (2-2)

Tucson Flowing Wells has been here before. The Caballeros won their first six games last year but dropped their next three to fall out of the playoff picture.  The remaining six opponents are all section games.

Cholla (3-0) hosts Sahuarita (0-3)

Sahuarita had the misfortune of opening up against upper-division opponents Tucson Sahuaro, Tucson Salpointe and Nogales. Now we get to see what the Mustangs are made of but opening up sectional play at Tucson Cholla makes this four tough games in a row.

One more loss and the Mustangs might have to win their section to make the playoffs.

DIVISION V

Section II

Benson (3-0)

Bisbee (1-1)

Tanque Verde (1-3)

San Manuel (1-1)

Tombstone (0-2)

Willcox (1-3)

Section VIII

Santa Cruz (3-0)

ASU Prep (2-1) at Benson (3-0)

If the Bobcats win this game then they might be 7-0 when they travel to Bisbee. One game at a time.

Santa Cruz (3-0) at Bisbee (1-1)

Eloy Santa Cruz has a chance to get more state-wide recognition, the kind the Dust Devils had when former Arizona State and NFL standouts Art Malone, Benny Malone and Levi Jones dominated the gridiron. Bisbee needs to rebound from a big loss to Oro Valley Pusch Ridge.

DIVISION VI

St. David (3-0)

Valley Union (3-0)

Ajo (2-1)

Duncan (1-2)

Duncan (1-2) at St. David (3-0)

St. David has already racked up 142 points and the Tigers just might break 200 on Friday night.

Glendale Prep (4-0) at Valley Union (3-0)

This is probably the game of the week or at least it should be. Something has to give. That's a five hour drive by school bus from north Glendale to Elfrida.
