Fifty-five games are scheduled to open the 2015 Arizona high school football season on Aug. 20-21 in what is called zero week. Quite the misnomer -- zero week. Five of last season's six state champs (Chandler, Centennial, Saguaro, River Valley and Yuma Catholic) open practice Monday (July 27) seeking a repeat or more as the case may be.
D-I defending champ Chandler opens at Pinnacle on Thursday Aug. 20. Four other champs start Friday Aug. 21 with Centennial (D-II champ now in D-I) hosting Long Beach Poly, Saguaro (D-III champ) at Valley Vista, Yuma at River Valley (D-IV champ) and Cortez at Yuma Catholic (D-V champ now in D-IV). D-VI champ Mogollon starts its season the following week.
The rest of the schools who don't play their initial game until Aug. 27, 28 or 29, begin workouts on Monday Aug. 3. Most schools that open with games Aug. 20-21 will have a bye at some point between Aug 28 and Oct. 31 unless they are playing an extra game to help fill another school's schedule.
