5A-I Central, Fiesta feature region-title matchups Feb. 1

With three weeks left in basketball's 5A regular season a couple of girls  region races could be all but decided after Tuesday night by head-to-head matchups of the top teams.

Chander and Hamilton, which met two weeks ago on MLK Day at Wells Fargo Arena, go at it again at Hamilton on Tuesday in the 5A Fiesta Region. Chandler dropped cold-shooting Hamilton easily in that one. Chandler is 6-0. Hamilton is 5-1. A Chandler victory puts Hamilton two games back with three to play and essentially three back since the Wolves would own the tie-breaker. Hamilton wins, it the race could go down to the final game. Chandler has won seven consecutive games since a blowout loss to St. Mary's on Jan 4.

Same scenario in the 5A Central with Mountain View visiting Highland Tuesday in an MLK Day rematch. Mountain View is 7-0 and Highland 6-1. Then Toros rallied for an overtime win on MLK Day. A Mountain View win puts it in command with the next closest team (Dobson) with three region losses. Mountain View has been without starting forward Carly Stine for the past week with a knee injury. Stine likely will miss at least another week.

Along with St. Mary's, Chandler, Hamilton, Mountain View and Highland are arguably the best five girls teams in 5A-I.
