AZ Cardinals step in to help Goldwater stay at home

The Arizona Cardinals stepped in to keep somebody from depriving Barry Goldwater’s football team from playing at home.

A vandal in a stolen vehicle destroyed Goldwater’s goal posts and some fencing, causing about $10,000 in damage this past weekend. The lawbreaker left Goldwater, located in northwest Phoenix, searching for a new home to play its Thursday game against Sunrise Mountain.

But the Cardinals put the breaks on those plans, lifting the Goldwater’s spirits in the process. The Cardinals contacted the Arizona Interscholastic Association to see if Goldwater wanted to use a portable goal post that belongs to the pro team.

Goldwater gladly accepted the offer.

“The Cardinals bend over backwards to make it happen,” said Bill Gahn, the district athletic director for Goldwater. “If we didn’t get the goal post, we would have had to move to another site.”

Gahn’s district’s insurance is covering the cost of purchasing two new goal posts.

Thursday night’s football game will be played with only one goal post, though, and it will remain on one end of Goldwater’s field. If a team scores a touchdown on the opposite end of the field, the extra point will be attempted where the goal post is placed.

The same goes for field goal attempts. It’s an odd scenario, but it’s still a victory for Goldwater.

“To play the game on our site, that’s a win for us,” Goldwater coach Rich Metcalf said. “This student body has gotten behind the team. We have some spirit.”
