Prep football: Week 2 8-game snapshot

September 4, 2014 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Not an outstanding week of matchups in the second full week of 2014, but here are eight games to check up on come late Friday night:

THURSDAY SEPT. 4

Liberty (2-0) at Mountain Ridge (1-0): The Thursday night special of the week has Liberty backing up its top 5 preseason ranking with two impressive wins. Quarterback Tyler Wyatt stepped into the limelight last week passing for 201 yards and three touchdowns to pace a 31-7 victory over D-III power Desert Edge. The week before running back Jack Schuiteboer rushed for 200 yards in a win over D-II ranked Ironwood Ridge. Wyatt hasn't scored yet this season from scrimmage, but as the Lions kicker has 13 points on a pair of field goals and 7-of-7 on PATs. Liberty tests a D-I opponent this time in Mountain Ridge. Mountain Ridge showed some mettle last week in winning its opener 23-17 over Cesar Chavez. Quarterback Robert Limmer tossed a pair of TD passes, including a momentum-changer just before halftime from 50 yards out to Jake Skadland that tied the game at half 10-10. Liberty prevailed when the teams met last year, 29-7.

FRIDAY SEPT. 5

Centennial (0-1) at Basha (1-0): Centennial had D-I highly-ranked Chandler on the ropes last week with an early 10-0 lead, but let the Wolves off the hook after giving up a couple short fields in the second half. Centennial's defense was good enough to win and will put Basha and new coach Gerald Todd to the test in this one. Centennial's standout running back Dedrick Young rushed for 160 yards and two TDs. That's a taste of what's to come for many of Centennial's foes. Basha didn't have an easy opener and played well for Todd in his debut. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Kelley passe for 203 yards and two TDs and ran for the Bears other two TDs. Kelley targeted and connected with seven receivers on the night. Kelley will face a tougher defense in this one. Basha's defense was decent in the opener giving up two TDs. Centennial won last year's meeting, 32-17.

Hamilton (1-0) at Brophy (1-1): Hamilton was off last week so has had a couple weeks to prepare for Brophy. The Huskies were very good in their opener on Aug. 22, disposing of Sandra Day O'Connor, 43-7. Junior back Kyeler Burke enjoyed a big game splitting 14 touches via run and reception for 222 yards and two TDs. Quarterback James Sosinski was efficient completing 11 of 13 attempts in his season debut. Hamilton handled Brophy, 26-9, last year. Brophy bounced back from its 43-0 loss to nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman with a 49-15 thumping of rebuilding Desert Mountain back on Arizona soil. Brophy was all about the big play with four of its TDs going for 50 yards or more (two TD passes, one rushing TD and a kick return). The Broncos got the production they need on a weekly basis from running back Ryan Velez (155 yards rushing) and wide out Isaiah Oliver (117 yards receiving). Quarterback Cade Knox accounted for four TDs, three through the air.

Marana Mtn. View (1-0) at Cienega (0-1): Marana Mountain View and Cienega opened the season in the top-10 of the D-II rankings. Mountain View won a rivalry game handily over Marana, 53-2, last week while Cienega dropped a tough one to also D-II ranked Ironwood Ridge, 17-7. Mountain View relied on he leadership of seasoned quarterback Justice Summerset, who accounted for 353 yards of offense -- 296 of it through the air. Mountain View displayed plenty of firepower despite playing without a pair of transfers from Tucson High as the AIA is investigatiing their transfer to Mountain View from Tucson High. Cienega engaged in defensive struggle with Ironwood Ridge, more on the bend-don't-break side of that ledger. Cienega quarterback didn't get many opportunities, but passed for 160 yards and ran for the Bobcats only TD. He has two main targets in two-way standout Terrence Johnson and Matt Aragon, who combined for 13 catches and 135 of the 160 yards. Mountain View has won the last three meetings between the schools, including last year's 21-0 triumph.

Sahuaro (1-0) at Sabino (0-1): Sahuaro didn't have a big day offensively, but managed a 13-10 victory over Tucson High in its opener. The Cougars used a pair of Demetri Fotinos field goals as the difference. Running back Derik Hall flirted with a 100-yard game, finishing with 93 yards rushing. Sabino gave defending D-II champ Salpointe its toughest game since 2012, grabbing an early lead but falling late, 31-21. Quarterback Emilio Araiza tossed two touchdown passes for the Sabercats. Sahuaro might have a mental edge in this one given Sabino's all-put bid to end Salpointe's winning streak (now 16 games) dating back to 2012 not to mention its Tucson-area domination off 44 straight triumphs. Sabino prevailed last year over Sahuaro, 27-14, with Araiza throwing a pair of TD passes..

Skyline (1-0) at Cibola (2-0): Skyline opened with an offensive explosion, piling up more than 600 yards in its 56-26 win over St. Mary's. Heading to Yuma will be a tougher  road test as Skyline looks to repeat as a playoff team this season. Running back Dylon Gillette ran for 204 yards and Amarii Keyes chipped in with a little more than 100 yards rushing to pace the rout. Cibola got a scare from Imperial High Calif., rallying from a 25-14 hafltime deficit. The Raiders scored with three minutes left to turn a 32-28 deficit into a win. Cibola is led by senior running back Abe Thompson, who rushed for 169 yards last week and junior quarterback Bailey Arvizo, who passed for 240 yards and three TDs. Arvizo's favorite target is Michael DeCorse-Hall. Skyline surrendered more than 300 yards passing to St. Mary's last week. The Coyotes are looking at a foe with a more balanced approach on offense in this one. Skyline held Thompson in check last year  (56 yards rushing).

Westview (1-0) at Boulder Creek (1-0): Coach Joe Parker won his debut as head coach as Westview toppled its namesake from San Diego, 48-13. A relentless rushing attack paced the Knights as they rushed for 468 yards. Three backs topped the century mark -- Rameihk Bowles (143), Jalen Johnson (124) and Tyler Vasko (105). Westview built a 27-0 lead at halftime and coasted the rest of the way. Boulder Creek made a successful debut for Brandon Willard in topping Mesa Mountain View, 27-20. The Jaguars passed for 223 yards and rushed for 200 in their triumph. It was a big opener for running back Blake Dawson, who rushed for 142 yards and caught four passes for 75 yards and two TDs. Quarterback Gunther Johnson, stymied by Westview in the Knights' 59-6 win over Boulder Creek last year, connected on four TD passes in beating Mountain View.

Joy Christian (1-0) at Pusch Ridge (1-0): Joy Christian had its way with Scottsdale Prep in its opener with a resounding 69-26 win. New quarterback Matt Mitchell operated fine in the driver's seat, passing for 289 yards and six touchdowns. With a group of seasoned receivers to throw to, Mitchell tossed two TDs each to Godfrey Mudavanhu, Isaiah Goodspeed and Dujuan Lawrence. Pusch Ridge wasn't pressed in blanking Miami, 42-0, in its opener. Pusch Ridge spread the wealth offensively, using a number of running backs and mixing in the pass occasionally in piling up 405 yards of offense.Pusch Ridge is led by returning starters Taylor Fitzgerald at running back and Ben Walker at receiver. Joy won last year's nip-and-tuck meeting on its home turf, 28-14.

300-WATCH: Cesar Chavez coach Jim Rattay (299 wins) continues pursuit of 300 wins when his Champions visit Mountain Pointe Friday night. Cactus' long-time mentor Larry Fetkenhier (299) goes for No. 300 with a road game at Mingus.
