Notes: Northwest Christian hosting Crush Cancer event
February 7, 2014 by Jose Garcia, AZPreps365
Northwest Christian is hosting its second annual Crush Cancer/Hoopcoming event Friday, with all of the proceeds going to the Stepping out 4 Hope foundation.
The foundation helps local families in need and also provides international aid. Friday’s event kicks off at 1:30 p.m. with the freshmen boys basketball game between Northwest Christian and Yuma Catholic and concludes with the 7:30 p.m. varsity game.
Northwest Christian and Yuma Catholic’s girls basketball teams also will be playing. The junior varsity and varsity girls will be wearing pink “Crush Cancer” uniforms.
“The uniforms (were first worn at) Gilbert Christian,” said Jim James, Northwest Christian’s middle school athletic director. “They’ve also (been) at Valley Christian, Red Mountain and some other schools. Everywhere these uniforms go the proceeds are going to fight cancer. It’s pretty neat to see these schools working together to make a difference.”
Fans attending the games can expect inflatable games for kids and an appearance by the Phoenix Suns Dancing Dads. Northwest Christian also will be selling food throughout the day.
Northwest Christian is located at 16401 N. 43rd Avenue in Phoenix.
Greenway coach wins No. 500
Greenway boys basketball coach Howard Mueller apparently didn’t want the attention, but it was recently learned that the very humble Mueller won his 500th boys basketball game.
The milestone occurred during the Judy Dixon Holiday tournament in December. Greenway celebrated Mueller’s achievement during its varsity game Thursday night.
