3rd PrimeTime Invite hits hardwood June 21-22 at Highland

It's been four months since a big-school boys basketball champ was crowned -- Corona del Sol repeated. Fans wanting to get a glimpse at top teams for 2014 get a look-see on Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22 at Highland High School.

That's when the 3rd annual PrimeTime Summer Invitational commences. The eight teams in the field are top-seed Corona del Sol, No. 2 Pinnacle, No. 3 Mesa, No. 4 Desert Mountain, No. 5 Gilbert, No. 6 Chaparral, No. 7 Mesa Mountain View and No. 8 Highland. Five of the teams reached the final eight in last season's D-I state tourney that saw Corona knock off Pinnacle in the final, Desert Mountain reach the semis and Gilbert and Mesa drop tough games in the quarters to Pinnacle and Desert Mountain, respectively. Gilbert eliminated Chaparral in the round of 16 and both Mountain View and Highland were toppled in the opening round..

Corona del Sol is led by standout guard Casey Benson, who is set for his fourth varsity campaign and has a pair of transfers Connor MacDougall (post) and Dane Kuiper (guard) bolstering the Aztecs' lineup. Other top players expected in their respective teams' lineups are Desert Mountain point guard Rolando Rhymes, Pinnacle forward Dorian Pickens, Mesa guard Christian Harris, Gilbert guard Anthony Bryant, Highland forward Jake Toolson and Mountain View center Payton Dastrup. 

The action opens Friday (june 21) with exhibtion games at 5 p.m. with Mesa vs. Highland and Corona vs. Chaparral followed at 6 p.m. by Gilbert-Pinnacle and Mountain View-Desert Mountain. Bracket play opens Friday evening with the following first-round schedule: 7 p.m. -- Highland vs. Corona del Sol; Chaparral vs. Mesa; 8 p.m.. --Mountain View vs. Pinnacle and Glbert vs. Desert Mountain.

Games resume Saturday June 22  with 10 a.m. losers' bracket games; 11 a.m. winners' bracket games a noon consolation final and a 1 p.m. title game.
