Fast facts for Division I state softball championship game
When and where: Monday May 13 -- Red Mountain (32-5) vs. Chaparral (28-11), 7:45 p.m. at ASU's Farrington Stadium
Prior meetings this season: Teams met twice with Red Mountain winning both. Red Mountain beat Chaparral in the third-place game of the Desert Mountain Invitational in late March, 8-7. Teams met in the winners' bracket at state nearly two weeks ago with Red Mountain prevailing, 5-1.
School softball history: Red Mountain is the three-time defending big-school champion and will be playing for the big-school title for the fith consecutive year, all those under current coach Rich Hamilton. Hamilton would become the first big-school coach to pilot four consecutive state-title teams should Red Mountain win. Five other coaches in state history have won four consecutive titles -- Seton's Jerry Mullin twice (1996-99-2A and 2002-05-3A), Chaparral's Jeff Oscarson (1995-98-4A), Hayden's Chito Guzman (1986-89-2A), Joseph Citys Teddi Baird (2000-03-1A) and San Manuel's Sheila Baize (1979-82, 2 in 4A and 2 in 3A). Baize holds the state record for most consecutive title game appearance as a coach - eight (1977-84). Since Red Mountain opened 25 years ago, it has won four state titles and been runner-up once. The other state title won byThe Lady Lions came in 2006 under Rich Pikosz. Chaparral, which has been open for nearly four decades, has a rich tradition in the sport. The Lady Firebirds have won five state titles one big-school crown (1989) and four in 4A (1995-1998). They have been runner-up three times.Oscarson coached all five title teams and two of the runners-up. Current Chaparral coach Stefanie Ewing is in her second season and is a former Desert Mountain standout who played collegiately at Oregon State.
The matchup: Red Mountain sends junior Bre Macha to the circle to oppose Chaparral junior Dallas McBride. They matched up on May 1 in the tournament with Macha getting the better of it and belting a two-run homer as well. Red Mountain has eight players in its usual starting lineup hitting between .375 and .479. The Lady Lions have blasted 45 homers withsix players having four or more each. Chaparral has eight hitters who usually start at .300 or better. McBride has double-digits in homers, hitting two in the Lady Firebirds last game against Mesa Mountain View.
