There's a couple weeks left in the boys volleyball regular season and Mesa High seems intent on building momentum right now.

The Jackrabbits won all of  their matches Friday and Saturday, including the title match Saturday afternoon against Perry, to capture their Jackrabbit Invitational at Jackrabbit Gym.

Mesa beat Perry Saturday morning in the winners'  bracket in two sets and grabbed title honors four hours later over Perry after the Pumas played their way through the losers' bracket. Title-game match scores were 25-23, 25-20.

"We were pretty consistent," Mesa coach Tony Millanes said. "Our defense was a notch better than last week, and that's a good thing. We faced some good competition, and we've got more coming up."

Mesa improved to 31-9 overall with its 8-0 mark in the tournament. They were pushed to three sets only once, in pool play by Sandra Day O'Connor. The championship match saw Mesa lead the first set late, 20-14, only to watch Perry reel off six straight points to even the set. A block by middle Jordan Thomas and a kill by Michael Schaper gave Mesa the two-point win.

It was more of the same in the second set. Mesa grabbed an early 8-5 lead, but another 6-0 run by Perry put the Pumas up three. Mesa got the six points back with Schaper serving. Schaper served an ace, had a kill and a trio of Perry hitting errors put the Jackrabbits in command, 14-11. Down the stretch Schaper had three of his team-high 12 kills for the match. JT Hatch and Jacob Komenda added two kills each among Mesa's final 11 points, with Komenda ending the match. Thomas and Komenda finished with five kills each. Clark Fleming led in digs with 15 and Hatch had 14. Hatch was in on 19 assists.

"I thought we played well," Perry coach Brian Pomerantz said. "It was a game of runs. When we made a small mistake they capitalized. We didn't make big mistakes. Mesa has so much cohesion. They're tough to beat."

Perry senior outside hitter Alex Berghorst led all players with 13 kills in the championship match. Teammate Mitch Harris added 10. Michael Hoffman led defensively with five digs.

Mesa is 11-1 in power rankings matches and faces top-10 Highland twice in the final two weeks. Perry is 12-2 in power-ranking matches with its only losses to Desert Vista and Hamilton.
