Basha softball stymies Perry with big second inning

Basha's softball team shrugged off a championship-game loss in the Desert Mountain invitational 10 days ago by winning three power-ranking games last week. One of those was against Perry, a high-flying team in its own right this season. The teams met for the second time in five days on Tuesday afternoon. The result wasn't  what Perry anticipated.

Basha's Kylie Shull stroked three hits and drove in five runs to lead a 15-hit attack as the Lady Bears produced a 13-3 romp over the Lady Pumas at Perry High.

Shull a senior third baseman/catcher, lined a solo homer to left in the first for a 1-0 lead and added a two-run single in a seven-run, second inning that sent Perry reeling. Shull capped her day with an RBI double in the seventh. She chipped in with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The eight runs in the first two frames came off Perry starter Jillian Leslie, who dropped a 4-0 decision to Basha on March 28. Leslie was intent on working Basha hitters inside and hit a consistent spot on the inner half in her two innings. It wasn't' however, a day for inside offerings to right-handed hitters to get strike calls. Perry coach Kevin Chapin decided to pull Leslie after two innings to give Basha a different look.

"We didn't get some calls, but they took it to us," Chapin said. "I thought we came in with a good attitude today, and honestly, I felt we were going to turn it around on them. Bottom line is for us to score three runs in two games is unacceptable. We're a power-hitting team. We didn't show it. ...

"We have to get our heads right and put this behind us. The same thing happened last year, and we came back and put together a winning streak. We'll have to do that again."

Basha improved to 19-2 overall and 7-0 in power-ranking games while Perry slipped to 18-4, 7-2. Basha needed the arm of one of its two primary pitchers -- Lynea Klemmedson -- over the last week. Klemmedson pitched complete-game wins over Gilbert (6-2), Perry and Casa Grande (7-1). She tossed the first four innings of Tuesday'sgame and unearned the victory. Klemmedson gave up three runs -- all unearned -- and five hits. Tag-team partner Kelsey Tidwell saw her first action since the Desert Mountain tournament on March 23, throwing the last three innings on Tuesday. Tidwell had been sidelined for disciplinary reasons, which are behind her now. Tidwell allowde two hits, no runs or walks and fanned three in her return.

Basha coach Scott Hoffmeyer is impressed with his team's performance, despite losing lopsidedly in the Desert Mountain Invite final and given the quality competition the Lady Bears have faced.

"We ran into a hot pitcher (Horizon's Tamara Statman)," Hoffmeyer said. "If you beat Canyon del Oro, Basha and Red Mountain in the same day that's pretty good. Lynea did the job holding down the fort for us....

"We're seeing a lot of good teams and it's good for us. We're able to see who's out there. There are more coming. We've got Mountain Ridge (Wednesday) Desert Ridge (Friday). A lot of good teams still on our schedule."

Joining Shull with a three-hit day for Basha was leadoff hitter Courtney Hiruko (3-for-5). Brooke Breland, Hailey Maher and Nicole Matta had two hits each. Seven starters had an RBI or more. Perry had seven hits -- all singles. Leslie was the only Perry player with two hits.
