Soph Wyatt shows remarkable maturity for Liberty baseball

Tyler Wyatt is not a game-changer. He is a game-decider. He doesn’t need to change anything. He just needs to keep doing what he is doing.

The sophomore was at it again for Peoria Liberty on Friday (March 29).

The right-hander pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 and hit a fifth-inning triple with the bases loaded to lift the Lions to a 4-0 victory over visiting neighborhood rival Peoria Sunrise Mountain.

It wasn’t the first time that Wyatt figured in the demise of Sunrise Mountain.

He hit a grand slam in a 6-1 victory for Liberty on March 12.

“He’s a special kid, one of those that come around only once in a lifetime,’’ said Liberty coach Mark Ernster.

Wyatt is a versatile athlete. He is expected to be the starter at quarterback for the Lions as a junior this fall.

Against Sunrise Mountain, he mixed off-speed stuff with his fastball to keep the opponents off-balance.

“He had command of the off-speed and threw it for strikes. If you can’t, use only your fastball, you become a predictable pitcher,’’ Ernster said.

Wyatt and Sunrise Mountain right-hander Joel Kuhnel were locked in a tight battle until the fifth. Liberty scored its first run in the second inning as the result of two infield hits and a throwing error.

The game remained close until Kuhnel came out after giving up an infield hit and a walk to begin the fifth.

A bunt single followed by a forceout at the plate set the stage for Wyatt.

He ripped a shot just inside the left-field foul line and into the corner, scoring Jake Johnson, Rudy Karre and Kyle Anulao. The way Wyatt was pitching, that was more than enough cushion.

Now Liberty, fourth in the Division II power seedings as of Friday morning (Sunrise Mountain was ninth), will focus its attention on fifth-seeded Greenway on Tuesday (April 2).

“We treat every game the same,’’ Ernster said. “We don’t look past anyone. We never make a game out to be like it’s the World Series. We just do what’s expected of us. Every guy understands what he needs to do.’’
