A potpourri of prep baseball spring-break tournament action

Perry's Eric Maxwell ripped a tie-breaking double in the eighth inning Monday morning to ignite a four-run inning and lift the Pumas to a 7-3 win over Mesa High in the opening game of the Highland Triple Play Classic at Highland High.
Maxwell had two hits and two RBI on the day. Dusty Wright added an RBI single in Perry's eighth inning rally. Kade Bishop earned the victory on the mound for Perry with four innings of work. Joe Eto was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Mesa. Eto pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up one earned run, six hits and one walk.
Mesa, which committed five errors (most leading to Perry's first three runs (all unearned), tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Joe Torres. Mesa left 11 runners on base, including the bases loaded in each of the third and fourth innings. Torres, Brandon Williamson and Tim Serna collected two hits each for Mesa.
Web gems went to Perry's Jeremy McCuin, who robbed Mesa's Schyler Dush of a hit in the seventh and turned it into a double play that nearly got Perry out of the seventh. Wright also made a diving catch in right field in the second inning.
in the final game of the day at Highland, the host Hawks got a one-hitter from Jake Brown and blanked Westwood, 13-0, in a game shortened to five innings. Brown faced the minimum -- 15 batters -- over the five innings allowing a hit to Westwood's Hever Bueno in in the second inning and striking out eight. Ethan Evanko and Kevan Elcock drove in three runs apiece for Highland.

MESQUITE-GILBERT TOURNAMENT
Basha's recipe for a 4-3 victory over Red Mountain on Monday afternoon -- three solo homers and a hit batter with the bases loaded.
Basha catcher Garrett Doane drove in the game-winning run on a hit by pitch with the sacks jammed in the third inning for the decisive run vs. Red Mountain at Gilbert High. Basha got homers from James Zieglerin the first inning and Ivan Sanchez and Doane in the second inning. Basha relievers Ziegler and Zach Torriente combined to give up just one hit over the final four innings, but pitched out of jams thanks to three walks, two hit batters and two errors during their time on the mound.
Ronnie Querry and Sanchez had two his apiece for Basha. Red Mountain got two hits each from Andrew Apodaca and Brody Ryan. Ryan also reached base on a walk and hit by pitch. Red Mountain did not commit an error and got a pair of fine back-hand plays from shortstop Jordan Zimmerman and third baseman Alex Sepulveda.
Over at Mesquite High School, Mesquite's Cole Valletta launched a grand slam to cap a five-run sixth inning that paced the Wildcats past Mesa Mountain View, 10-5.
Mesquite captialized on three walks, a hit batter and wild pitch in snapping the 5-5 tie. The only hit of the inning was Valletta's homer. Josh Webster earned the victory with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Matt Waldren had two doubles and an RBI for Mesquite and James Harrington added an RBI single and three walks.
Ronnie Adair led Mountain View with three hits and teammates Bryce Bailley and Conner Wise had two hits each. Kyler Kocher blasted a two-run homer for Mountain View in a four-run, fourth inning..
Mountain View third baseman Jeff Wooton had six assists on a variety of ground balls hit his way .Mesquite second baseman Parker Holland recorded six assists and a put out.
