Mountain View''s boys basketball team had a checklist of of goals Tuesday night in its rematch with Marcos de Niza from nearly two months ago. Control tempo, get chances for post Payton Dastrup and keep a lid on Marcos de Niza's Richaud Gittens.
All those goals were met with near precision as Mountain View was steady from start to finish in a 68-39 rout at Toro Gym.
Mountain View (14-8 overall, 10-4 power-ranking games), which dropped the first meeting with Marcos on Nov. 27 (78-75), was extremely patient in the first half in building a 37-22 advantage. The Toros mostly settled for shots inside with Dastrup, who had a nice touch and plenty of good footwork in scoring 18 first-half points. Dastrup, a 6-foot-9 junior, made 8-of-10 field goals with nothing from six feet or more. Dastrup finished with a monster night -- 25 points, 16 rebounds, four blocks and four assists.
"Sometimes Payton makes it harder than it has to be," Mountain View coach Gary Ernst said. "Tonight he kept it simple. He had an outstanding game."
Dastrup had some big-time help in the scoring department from senior forward Brian Butler. Butler scored 12 points in the first half and finished with 18. He canned a trio of threes and gave a perimeter presence along with Colton Meo (two threes) to keep Marcos honest on defense. The Toros also got eight points off the bench from Josh Bribiescas, who got some practice on reverse layups as part of his contribution.
Then there was an emphasis on containing Gittens, who averages 18 points a game.
"We felt he was the guy we had to concentrate on," Ernst said of Gittens. "He runs the floor well. He's the catalyst and makes them go."
Gittens finished with just nine points. All were scored in the second period. Two of his baskets were threes that helped pull Marcos within 23-19 with 5:20 left in the second period. A 14-3 run to end the period by Mountain View took the Padres out of contention.
Mountain View has played a tough slate of games in the past couple weeks, which included wins over Brophy, Carl Hayden, Marcos de Niza and and tough losses to Mesa and Desert Mountain. Ernst doesn't want his team to have to rely solely on Dastrup. Games like Tuesday's where several players contributed make the Toros tougher defend and beat.
"We want to have four scorers on the floor," Ernst said. "We've had some good games -- tonight, Brophy, some awfully good moments against Desert Mountain, but we didn't finish. The other night (Rock) Shill had 18 points. We're showing better in bits and pieces."
Marcos de Niza (15-5, 9-4 prg) has run into a tough patch of late with blowout losses in two of its last three games to Corona del Sol and Mountain View. The Padres were led in scoring Tuesday by Tyler Lazenby with 10. Devin White and Gittens had nine each.
