Highland's Jake Toolson sewed it up with seven free throws in the final 1 minute and 43 seconds, but Toolson was able to close the deal thanks in great part to the pressure and quick hands of teammate Isaiah Washington.

Washington made three steals in a one-minute span midway through the final period that led to six straight points Saturday night, opening the door for Highland to defeat Brophy Prep, 59-50, in the championship game of the McClintock Holiday Shootout at McClintock's Doc Zinke Gym.

"I've been on him, in his face all year," Highland coach Derrick Donaldson said of his senior guard. "I'm not going to let up...... We pride ourselves on defense."

In a game tight from the get-go, Brophy broke out early in the fourth period after the teams ended the third tied at 36.  Breaking out meant a 41-38 lead with 6:42 to play thanks to baskets by Austin Hammond and Steve Stanley and a free throw by Tim Kempton. Highland (12-3) went on a 13-0 run at that points with Washington's first steal netting him two free throws with 4:43 to play. His next steal netted him an assist to Bryce Farabee for a layup at 4:25 and the final one in the flurry Washington took home himselft at 3:43.

Brophy managed to pull within 52-50 with 1:45 to play thanks to seven free throws from Kempton and Hammond.  Brophy went scoreless the rest of the night while Toolson settled in from a rough shooting night to make 7-of-8 free throws in the final 100 seconds.

Toolson finished with 17 points, but was 3-of-15 from the field. Farabee chipped in with 15 points and Austin Witherill added 12 points. Highland has won its last nine games, five power-point games and four in the Shootout.

"We're getting to where it's not one guy," Donaldson said, relishing the fact that even though Toolson struggled the Hawks won impressively. "I've told Jake he doesn't have to do it all. Just do a little bit. The rest of the guys have your back."

Kempton led Brophy with 20 points. Like Toolson, however, Kempton wasn't lighting it up despite the final output. Kempton shot 5-of-16 from the floor -- the rest free throws. Hammond finished with 11 for the Broncos, who dropped to 14-2 and had a nine-game winning streak broken.
