Trevor Browne soccer off to 2-0 start after quality win

Making a good first impression at the start of a season in recent years is something that Trevor Browne has down pat.
But if it learns how to finish strong, the Phoenix boys soccer program may start to leave a lasting impression.
Trevor Browne is off to another good start after beating two quality teams, Avondale Westview on Tuesday and Goodyear Millennium Friday night, in its first week of the 2012-13 season. But Trevor Browne still has a lot of work to do before it can prove that it’s build to last.
“We have some potential and good young kids,” Trevor Browne’s 10-year coach Jeff Scofield said.
Scofield’s team, which lacks a legitimate scoring threat, didn’t really start to put pressure on Millennium’s young defensive line until the second half.
Millennium played without one of its captains, midfielder Kyle Morlack (injured), and other key players due to other issues, forcing Millennium (1-1) to start a handful of young players. But other than Trevor Browne’s second half goal and an error off a throw in that almost led to another goal, Millennium’s three-year starter in goal, Tyler Pavlet, had a solid outing, keeping Millennium in the game until 14:35 remained in the match.
That’s when Trevor Browne’s Pablo Ramirez scored the only goal of the game and the first of Ramirez’s varsity career. The scoring play started after a long free kick reached Ramirez’s teammate, Maurillo Cervantes.
Cervantes seemed to then pass the ball to Ramirez, who immediately took a 20-yard shot that reached the back of Millennium’s net.
“Terrific,” said Ramirez, a sophomore, when asked how he felt after scoring his first varsity goal.
Trevor Browne took only five shots in the first half, but it had that many after the first eight minutes of the second half elapsed as Trevor Browne attacked the left side of Millennium’s defense. Millennium’s best scoring opportunities came in the second half, but Trevor Browne’s freshman goalkeeper Gilberto Sanchez wasn’t really threatened.
Another talented freshman goalkeeper, Oswaldo Machado, started for Trevor Browne in the first half.
History
It’s rare to catch one of the good guys in the Arizona high school coaching circle, Millennium soccer coach Ben Ganados, in a bad mood.
He always seems to have a smile on his face. Despite seeing his team drop Friday’s match to Trevor Browne, Ganados was flashing that smile.
That’s because two of his former prized soccer pupils, Sam Eid and Chad Williams, were talking to Ganados after Friday’s game. Eid and Williams were All-Arizona products during their senior seasons in 2004.
Williams was named The Arizona Republic’s Big School Player of the Year that season after helping Millennium win its only soccer title and finish 24-0. Williams is currently working for US Club Soccer as an event coordinator in the East Coast, and Eid is now a teacher at Avondale Agua Fria.
