The Arizona Interscholastic Association’s football committee approved 24 of the 44 football placement appeals schools filed for the next two-year scheduling block.

The schools that were denied can file another appeal but this time to the AIA’s executive board. Those appeals must be sent to Lorie Tranter (ltranter@aiaonline.org) by Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.

Phoenix Alhambra, Phoenix Carl Hayden and Phoenix Central wanted to move from Division I to Division III, but the football committee voted to place those football programs in Division II instead. St. Mary’s request to move to Division II football was granted.

Unless St. Mary’s and Phoenix Brophy agree to play against each other, St. Mary’s move to another division marks the end of what was once one of the state’s greatest annual rivalry games. Westwood's appeal to drop to Division II was approved.
