Sabino's Billy Comeaux shot the only sub-par round Monday to lead the Division II boys state golf tournament by one stroke at Silverbell Golf Course in Tucson. Comeaux, a senior, shot a 1-under-par 69. Comeaux finished in a tie for 22nd at last year's state tournament. He leads last year's champ, Canyon del Oro's Jaime Waltmire. Waltimire fired an even-par 70.
Four golfers shot 71 -- Salpointe's Ryan Tanner, Thunderbird's Jake Chanen and Dan Strazinski and Notre Dame's Austin Stadeli. Six more ended the first round at 72. Twenty-three golfers are within five shots of the lead. Thunderbird leads a tight, three-team race after the first day. Thunderbird's score of 286 is followed by Canyon del Oro (289) and Notre Dame Prep (295). Canyon del Oro is the defending team champ. Tee times begin for Tuesday's final round begin at 7:15 a.m. with the final goups teeing off at 9:15.
