In the 17th annual meeting between two schools separated by just three miles, Higley spoiled Williams Field's senior night with a dominant 46-21 victory in the latest installment of the Knighthawk Trophy rivalry on Friday. The Knights improved to 8-1, while the Black Hawks fell to 5-4.

Higley senior quarterback Anthony Palka once again led the way, completing 15 of 19 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 135 yards and three scores, including a 66-yard touchdown run late in the first half.

"Their linebackers play very aggressively, so we wanted to take advantage of that with those deep passes," Higley coach Eddy Zuby said. "We're multidimensional as an offense considering all the talent we have. Our offensive line and running backs are really good, so we just have to continue to go out and compete and sharpen our sword."

Williams Field quarterback Dominick Barjona struggled to establish a rhythm against Higley's defense. He completed 16 of 30 passes for 230 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 2 yards.

Higley came out fast, scoring touchdowns on two of its first three possessions. The other drive ended on downs.

The Knights opened the scoring with a nine-play, 65-yard drive that lasted more than three minutes and featured Palka's playmaking ability both through the air and on the ground.

"We felt like we had a better matchup against their cornerbacks, against that Cover 3, and we definitely got the pass game going," Palka said. "We have a lot of speed at receiver and a lot of play-action, which really helped us out tonight. This rivalry means a lot to me. We lost to them on our senior night last year, so it felt really good to get this get-back."

The Knights' defense forced three-and-outs on Williams Field's first two possessions, and running back Antonio Young capped Higley's second scoring drive with a 24-yard touchdown run.

Young finished with 14 carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

"I couldn't play much my freshman year against them, so I was upset about that," Young said. "My sophomore year we swept them. Junior year we ended up losing, so coming back this year and getting the win was amazing."

Williams Field answered with a touchdown to cut the deficit to 12-7, but Higley quickly regained momentum when return specialist Kam Richardson returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown.

The Black Hawks then punted on three consecutive possessions while Palka added his 66-yard touchdown run before halftime, giving Higley a 26-7 lead at the break.

Williams Field opened the second half with a touchdown drive that took just over two minutes to cut the lead to 26-14. They were poised to regain possession after forcing a Higley punt and a chance to make it a one-score game, but the Black Hawks instead committed a costly illegal-substitution penalty on the punt, giving them a first down and extending the drive.

The Knights capitalized with a touchdown and added scores on their next two possessions to seize control.

Williams Field turned the ball over on three of its final four drives, losing two fumbles and failing to convert on one fourth-down attempt.

"We got beat in all three phases tonight," Williams Field coach Steve Campbell said. "The kick return for a touchdown, we had two kicks go out of bounds, the illegal substitution, two fumbles in their territory, and gave up too many big plays."

"You have to learn from this, especially since we have bigger games ahead," Campbell added. "If it doesn't bother you tomorrow morning and make you have a mission to get better, then you're not a very good football team."

It is the third straight loss in which the Black Hawks have allowed at least 40 points, while Higley's explosive offense has scored at least 31 points in all nine games this season and is averaging 46.7 points per game.

A lightning delay halted play for about an hour at the start of the third quarter, but neither team appeared affected once action resumed.

Both teams will wrap up the regular season next week before the playoffs. Williams Field travels to Mesa (4-5), while Higley visits Brophy College Prep (6-3). Both games will impact postseason positioning.
