SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — With its playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Scottsdale Prep delivered its strongest performance of the season Thursday night, defeating Heritage Academy Mesa 60-28 behind an explosive passing attack and a defense that forced multiple turnovers.
Entering the matchup with a 3-5 record, the Spartans needed a victory to remain in postseason contention. After trailing 8-7 early, Scottsdale Prep seized momentum with an interception returned for a touchdown and never looked back.
“Our backs were against the wall,” Scottsdale Prep head coach Andrew Gamboa said. “We had yet to play our best brand of football, and we were just hoping that tonight would be that night.”
Coming off a 42-7 loss to Arizona Lutheran Academy on Oct. 9, the Spartans were searching for consistency. Throughout the season, Scottsdale Prep had shown flashes of success but struggled to put together a complete performance on both sides of the ball.
Against Heritage Academy Mesa, that changed.
The pick-six shifted the momentum in favor of the Spartans, who continued building their lead behind a productive passing offense.
Creating turnovers had been a major emphasis for Scottsdale Prep throughout the week. During practice, the Spartans focused on stripping the football and forcing mistakes, preparation that paid off Thursday.
The defense forced multiple turnovers, repeatedly giving Scottsdale Prep’s offense opportunities to extend its lead. The Spartans capitalized on those possessions while preventing Heritage Academy Mesa from regaining momentum.
Scottsdale Prep also had to overcome challenges offensively. The Spartans initially planned to establish their running attack with two running backs, but injuries, along with trouble on the offensive line and difficulty finding running lanes, forced them to make adjustments.
Rather than continuing to rely on the ground game, Scottsdale Prep turned to its passing attack, targeting favorable matchups between its receivers and Heritage Academy Mesa’s secondary
The adjustment proved effective.
Senior quarterback Jackson Larson connected with his receivers throughout the night, helping the Spartans finish with seven passing touchdowns. Wide receiver Braxton Whittington led the charge with four touchdowns, creating problems for Heritage Academy Mesa’s defense.
“He is a mismatch for anybody,” Gamboa said. “His skill set, his mindset, his will to win is truly second to none.”
Whittington's performance reflected the dedication he has shown throughout his high school career. Beyond regular practices, he has spent additional time working on the field and developing his abilities as a receiver.
His mother, Cathryn Whittington, has witnessed that commitment firsthand.
“He goes out and does field work,” Cathryn Whittington said. He does not go out with the boys. He is dedicated.” For the Whittington family, Thursday's game carried additional significance. Watching Braxton compete in one of his final regular-season appearances marked an emotional moment after years of supporting his football career.
“It is very intense, very emotional, and absolutely beautiful,” Cathryn Whittington said.
The victory also presented a significant step forward for Scottsdale Prep after a season marked by inconsistency. With the season on the line, the Spartans put together a complete game on offense, defense, and special teams.
The win improved Scottsdale Prep’s record to 4-5, closing out its regular season with a win as the team awaits its postseason fate. By combining an explosive passing attack with an aggressive defense to finish on a winning note, the Spartans have left their postseason hopes up to the playoff selection process.
For Braxton Whittington, the victory meant more than improving the team’s record. After three years playing for Scottsdale Prep, sharing a convincing win with his teammates made the night especially memorable.
“I loved playing here for the last three years,” Braxton Whittington said. “I just feel so blessed.”
