AZ College Prep went 8-1 at the Lancer Invitational held Friday and Saturday in Tucson and the Knights came away with the championship trophy after beating Salpointe Catholic 2-1 in the final match.

The Knights took the first set 25-23 after scoring the last two points to break a 23-23 tie but the Lancers won the second set 25-21 to force a third set where the Lancers built a 13-8 lead only to see the Knights close on a 7-0 run for the 15-13 victory.  AZ College Prep sophomore Chloe Johnson was named tournament MVP and she recorded 10 assists in the championship final and senior middle Emma Caldwell had seven kills.

Salpointe junior Callen Hutchens had 14 assists and 12 kills, Viktorjia Petravicius added seven assists, Hunter Hashim had nine kills and Sophia Lopez had seven.

Salpointe continues 5A Sonoran play with a trip to Marana Mountain View on Tuesday and the Knights will enter a long stretch of 6A Premier matches starting with a trip to Hamilton on the same night.

Canyon del Oro beat Tanque Verde 2-1 in the third place match. The Dorados beat AZ College Prep in pool play and Tanque Verde beat Salpointe in pool play also.
