Flowing Wells collected seven interceptions to help defeat McClintock 39-0 Tuesday night at home and three of the of takeaways were returned for touchdowns as the team gave up only 101 yards passing a year after giving up 313 to the Chargers.

First-year head coach Dakota Madrid is joined by freshman quarterback Aniayah Fermon who finished with 94 yards passing (12-19) and two touchdowns. Madrid also finished with 26 yards rushing on three attempts and sophomore QB Italia Olivas played most of the fourth quarter to finish out the game for Flowing Wells. Olivas had 29 yards passing on six completions.

“Freshmen want to come in and put their stamp on the team and Aniayah really has,” Madrid said. “She came in right away. She was throwing bombs and she has accuracy. So she, from day one, we had her as our QB.”

As well as Fermon played in her debut, the defense came out strong right away with senior Brisi Quevedo coming up with the first of her two interceptions to put Flowing Wells up 7-0 with 9:59 left in the first. Quevedo came up with her second interception on the next drive which helped set up a 13-yard TD pass to senior Kenzly Pond to make it 13-0.

Brie Walker had three interceptions on the night and she returned her first for 18 yards to make it 19-0 to start the second quarter. Fermon flipped the ball to Pond and then Pond hit senior Olivia Hitchings from 29 yards out to make it 26-0.

Senior Naty Carranco returned an interception 38 yards to make it 32-0 and then Walker picked up her second interception to help set up a 25-yard pass from Fermon to Pond to make it 39-0 at the half.

“Our defense gave us a lot of points - a lot of points,” Madrid added. “It's come very far from our first season to this season. The girls put a lot of hard work in during the summer and they communicate. We're a team, if something goes wrong, they pick each other up, and that's how the defense works.”

For McClintock head coach Renee Ramos, her halftime adjustments proved valuable in showing her team how good they can be with her Chargers keeping Flowing Wells scoreless after the half.

“Beginning was rough - It was very rough but we changed it around at halftime,” Ramos explained. “They had energy when they came out in the second half and we looked amazing and I'm proud of them for that.”

Flowing Wells did not score in the second half but the defense also held McClintock. Walker collected her third interception and sophomore Israa Kharbouch added another.

“I would say we need to pay attention, calling out plays and everything,” Madrid added on what his team need to do from here. “I would say that everything else should come easily for the girls.”

The Chargers had bright spots with junior Madison Chase collecting 48 yards on four catches and senior Trinitee Jackson ending with 36 yards on three catches. Junior Seriah Sepulveda had 46 yards passing and Brooklyn Bosman added 65.

“I do see a bright future with us,” Ramos added. “This is our first season together as a team and I'm super excited.”

Pond had five catches for 48 yards and two TDs for Flowing Wells and she threw for a score and Hitchings collected 46 yards receiving on four catches ad a TD. Kharbouch made three extra points.

Flowing Wells (1-0) hosts Desert View (0-1) on Thursday and McClintock (0-1) hosts Campo Verde (0-1) on the same night.
