The Tucson area was hit with dust storms, rain and lightning, which triggered mandatory game delays across the Old Pueblo Thursday night. The start time for the Coaches for Charity Kickoff Classic held at Canyon del Oro was moved from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. and the Dorados pulled away from Trevor G. Browne 41-0 in the first half, with more lightning ending the game at 9:30 p.m. with both teams waiting in the their respective locker rooms.

Had the game continued, the second half might have started around 10 p.m. with no guarantees as to when the game would end with more weather moving in.

Canyon del Oro beat the Bruins 49-0 to start the season off last year but the Dorados went on to finish 3-7 on the year and Browne went 2-8. Still, it looked like the Bruins were going to score early at Canyon del Oro to set a new tone but a 78-yard run from James Brisby on a long third down turned into a 95-yard interception return from John Hansen two plays later to put the Dorados up 7-0.

The Bruin offense stalled on the next drive and Peyton Strang hit Jayden Smith from 23 yards out to put CDO up 14-0. The game clock was kept on the field due to a malfunctioning scoreboard so no exact times were available.

Browne was forced to punt again but a low kick hit the line and Manuel Hernandez scooped up the ball and he ran it in for a short score to put the Dorados up 21-0. The Bruins gave the ball back on downs as the first quarter ended and Tai Holmes made it 27-0 on another short run and a missed extra point.

The Dorados covered the ensuing kickoff and then Strang found Ethan Brady from 15 yards out to make it 34-0. The Bruins gave the ball back on downs and Strang hit Smith for 42 yards to move the ball down the field. Brody Elicio made it 41-0 moments later from six yards out and that’s how the half ended.

Brisby finished with 71 yards on the night for the Bruins and Joshua Estell caught a pass for 26 yards. Strang went 4 for 4 for 93 yards and two touchdowns and Smith had three catches for 78 yards and a score.

Browne (0-1) returns to Southern Arizona play at Mountain View Marana (0-0) next Friday and Canyon del Oro (1-0) will visit Mica Mountain (0-0) on the same night.
