After leading the Rio Rico varsity baseball team through a competitive schedule, Jesus Rodriguez is ready to represent Rio Rico at the next level. Fresh off a successful season as the Hawks team captain, Rodriguez has committed to continue his baseball career at New Mexico Military Institute.

"I still have to prove myself, because it's earned, not given," says Rodriguez, "Even though I have the full ride, I still have to earn the spot to play."

His journey as an athlete began when he played soccer at a young age. However, he knew he was drawn to baseball because it was the sport played by both his dad and grandfather. For Rodriguez, it wasn't just a hobby. Eventually, it became his lifestyle. Once he reached high school and discovered he had a shot to play varsity his freshman year, he became serious about his dedication to the sport. Now, he leaves the Hawks nest as one of the team leaders, having left his mark on Rio Rico High School.

However, his path to success wasn't without challenges. During his sophomore year, Rodriguez took a month away from the game. It was during this time that he decided nothing could hold him back from what he loves.

"It felt more like a job than having fun, and that's when I took a month off," says Rodriguez, "But when I wasn't playing, I was watching it, thinking about it, and dreaming about it, and that's what made me realize it's what I love the most."

Throughout his athletic career, Rodriguez has considered his family to be his biggest supporters. From late nights to early mornings, it was their encouragement and guidance that gave him the tools he needed to succeed.

"My dad would always tell me how I could improve. Even on nights when he'd come home exhausted, he would say 'Hey, let's go practice,'" says Rodriguez, "My sister is my biggest idol, and my mom and grandparents haven't missed a single game. They've made me into the athlete I am now."

Although his baseball dreams are taking him out-of-state, his passion began in Rio Rico. As he prepares to join the Broncos, there is no doubt he will remain true to his roots as a Hawk.

"I love everything about Rio," he says,  "It's where my family lives and it's where my team is. I'll always have time for this town."
